Currently based in Los Angeles, Eliza Roe is a singer-songwriter celebrated for her dynamic collaborations with electronic producers. From starting out on Soundcloud in 2014, where she shared musical ventures with her high school friend Josh Fuller, known as YOUKNOWWHO!, she’s been on an exciting musical adventure that’s resulted in truly stellar musical works.
Making her official artistic entrance in 2018, she dropped her debut single “Nowhere” with Caleb Welch which she’s since followed up with a string of singles that track the ever-evolving sounds of her unique sonic vision. Crafting music in a range of different styles, her free-flowing and versatile output has seen her create music from EDM to alternative folk.
Now she brings us her latest release with the new single titled “Ethereal Junkie,” a song that sees her explore a dream pop sound. This time linking up with New York-based artist Kevin Kim, the pair wrote the song together when Eliza was living in New York City in 2018. “It was written in a period of my life where I felt like I was in a fish bowl, but I actually find it hopefully melancholic all these years later. We shelved it for so many years and then all of the sudden, it just felt like it was the right time to release it,“ she shares.
Laying down a hazy shoegaze-tinged soundscape on “Ethereal Junkie,” soft lo-fi guitar tones drift over the gently punching beat as Eliza’s airy voice spins elegant melodic leads above. Fluttering with balletic dance above the fuzzy arrangement, her vocals cast an enchanting scene as the energy swells with the rattle of hi hats and pulse of electronic bas lines.
Brimming delicate writing and shining with a mesmeric shimmer, “Ethereal Junkie” sees Eliza Roe and Kevin Kim serve up an enveloping sound full of blissful melodies and engrossing instrumentation. With the subtle drive from the beat and the atmospheric tones of the layers of sonic textures, it’s a spellbinding listening experience that showcases Eliza’s songwriting talent while revealing a new side to her compelling sound.
Commenting further on the context behind the song, she offers, “I became fixated on doing everything in my power to hold onto relationships that were naturally breaking down. It was a cycle of punishing myself for situations that were out of my control, and I dulled myself for a while to fit into someone else’s puzzle.”
