Newcomer MICKEY B arrives as a promising new act in the alternative rock scene, blending his Italian-American heritage with a wealth of experiences garnered from his travels across Europe and beyond. Now based in London, he channels his own journey into music, offering a subjective and storytelling lens through which to explore his experiences via poignant lyricism and a highly unique sound.
As a producer and multi-instrumentalist, he brings a diverse set of skills to his creative output, even teaching piano to support his artistic endeavours. Now unveiling his sonic vision under the MICKEY B name for the first time, he brings us his brand new debut EP titled Dry Lands.
With his first release, MICKEY B offers a deeply personal exploration of the space between slavery and freedom, distilling significant moments of life as he’s lived it with pure emotion and authenticity. The three-track release serves as an autobiographical journey, with each song painting a vivid picture of the desert landscape that exists within the human soul.
Opened by “Land of Dust,” softly plucked clean guitar tones set a melancholic atmosphere for MICKEY B’s aching vocals to drift above as the mellow snap of drums carries a swaying rhythm. With an emotive performance that flutters between powerful delivery and airy falsetto, he crafts a truly gripping soundscape peppered with lively moments of strummed chords and fluttering piano note runs before building to an emphatic end. It’s a superb example of his original songwriting style and talent to bring it to life in such a compelling way.
“Chains on the Ground” follows with a scene of acoustic guitar tones and pattering drums as the artist’s expressive voice threads emo rock-inflected melodies above. Rising with pulsing bass guitar lines and swelling anticipation, the song takes on a theatrical quality as overlapping vocal layers and atmospheric sonic textures creates a cinematic and enveloping acoustic rock sound.
With “Wash My Hands,” a wistful arrangement of lilting guitar rhythms, playful piano lines and laid back percussive taps set up MICKEY B’s dazzling vocal performance. With shifting rhythms and evolving instrumental backing, the track flows with splashy drums and impactful sonic energy to provide an enthralling finale to MICKEY B’s sensational debut EP which sees him make a thrilling entrance as an exciting new artist on the rise.
