Under her own name Alessia De Gasperis, the Toronto-born and Los Angeles-based artist has been winning over fans around the world during the last three years. However, she’s no stranger to sonic success, having previously made a significant impact under the moniker kai. Featured on Childish Gambino’s “Crawl,” in 2016 she linked up with Flume on the multi-platinum Grammy Award-nominated single “Never Be Like You” as well as Jack Ü’s hit track “Mind.”
In 2021, she opened a new chapter in her thrilling musical story and reintroduced herself under her own name to let her musical output come to life in the most authentic way to date. Dropping the first single under her name with “Flow,” in 2022 she followed it up with singles two and three.
Now she’s back, returning this year with her brand new single titled “Evil Eye,” an alternative pop outing that takes listeners on a melodic journey of liberation from the shackles of toxic love. Co-produced by Isaac Valenzuela and Alessia herself, with Matt Parad contributing on bass and guitar, “Evil Eye” showcases a unique blend of laid-back grooves and compelling emotional depth.
Opened by the lo-fi buzz of instrumental textures, a hazy sound descends before the punch of shuffling drums ushers in Alessia’s stunning vocal leads. Bending from the soft hushed lows to the fluttering highs, she spins silky melodic leads above the laid back energy of grooving bass lines and slick guitar rhythms cut with atmospheric string flourishes.
Serving up an infectious chorus of instantly memorable vocal hooks rising the danceable sway of the arrangement, “Evil Eye” sees Alessia De Gasperis return with a sensational alternative pop jam. Capturing a sound that’s at once unique and progressive while also distilling a timeless aesthetic filtered through her own cutting edge sonic lens, “Evil Eye” offers yet another display of the artist’s captivating sonic vision and incredible vocal performance.
Paired with the single is a music video that features Alessia performing the track against the backdrop of a city at night through to the soft blue glow of dawn to offer an engaging visual accompaniment for the music. As she continues to go from strength to strength on her already decorated musical adventure, we can’t wait to see what she’s got in store for the rest of 2024 and beyond.
