Why Bonnie is an outfit led by singer-songwriter Blair Howerton, which initially took root in the music scene of Austin, Texas, before finding its current home in Brooklyn, New York. Joined by Chance Williams on bass and Josh Malett on drums, the band has crafted a unique sound that blends elements of pop, rock and Americana.
First unveiling the project back in 2018 with the debut single “Made Of Paper,” followed by sophomore track “Practice” and the debut EP In Water, Why Bonnie has since shared a string of singles, EPs and the full-length record 90 In November, a nostalgic homage to Blair’s Texas upbringing.
Now signed to the Fire Talk imprint, Why Bonnie returns with their latest single, “Dotted Line.” Departing from their previous Americana influences, “Dotted Line” embraces pop and rock styling while retaining the band’s charm and lyrical depth.
The genesis of “Dotted Line” lies in Howerton’s personal struggles with the pressures of capitalism and societal expectations. Written during a period of financial hardship, the song serves as a defiant declaration against the relentless pursuit of success at any cost. Blair Howerton’s lyrics paint a picture of disillusionment, with the song’s title “dotted line” symbolising a Faustian bargain with the forces of conformity.
Opened by the lively strums of clean guitar, the snapping beat and pulse of bass guitar sets a grooving backing before dipping down the arrangement for Blair’s smooth vocal leads. Spinning catchy lines above intricate guitar crunches and synth stretches, the chorus rises with shimmering chords and infectious melodic leads, resulting in a truly charming pop-focused indie rock outing.
Building to a rousing crescendo, the finale bursts with sonic energy to leave a lasting memory of Why Bonnie’s superb new single. Paired with the single is the music video that sees Blair and her bandmates acting out various scenes wrapped in colourful filters, adding a abstract visual storyline to pair with the music.
