Stockholm-based singer-songwriter Vilhelm Buchaus is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who’s been winning over fans across Sweden and beyond with his original music. At just 22 years old, his ability to distill emotions and personal experiences into compelling lyrics is perhaps the best example of his artistic maturity, brought to life by his commanding vocals and instrumental panache.
With guitar and vocals at the forefront, he’s crafted a unique sound influenced by the likes of John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Ed Sheeran and The 1975. His music often features a rock band setup, enhanced by beautiful piano arrangements, acoustic touches, powerful drums and distorted guitars, creating a stunning sonic fabric.
Vilhelm’s musical journey first began on YouTube, where he shared both covers and original songs, gradually building a loyal following. His official debut came in 2023 with the single “First Cut,” kicking off a string of well-received releases over the last year. His rich voice and slick guitar playing quickly endeared him to listeners, as he shared life experiences with the hope of offering the same solace and understanding that music has provided him.
This year, he continues to explore new musical terrains in his most ambitious release to date; his upcoming debut EP set to drop this Autumn via the German imprint Guesstimate under exclusive license from TEN Records. Offering the first taste of the release, last month he shared the single “Snow In The Summer.”
Following the energetic rock sound of that song, he now brings us the second track lifted from the EP with the brand new single titled “Dying Light,” this time presenting an epic rock ballad about growing up with big dreams in a small town. The song captures a nostalgic sound that immediately transports listeners back to the golden era of 80s rock, channelling the timeless sounds of bands like of Bon Jovi and Aerosmith.
The song’s production, led by Jacob Werner and the collaborative writing efforts of Vilhelm, Jacob and Amanda Kongshaug, result in a sensational sound. Thematically, “Dying Light” is a poignant reflection on the passage of time and the evolution of dreams. Vilhelm sings about his hometown, capturing his experience of growing up in a place where aspirations often clash with reality.
Opened by the bright strums of acoustic guitar an soft plinks of piano, the arrangement launches with the mellow energy of drums before Vilhelm’s soulful vocals drift in to thread spellbinding. Rising in the chorus with a swell of sonic energy, capped by his dazzling vocal performance, “Dying Light” puts the songwriting talent and performance skills of Vilhelm Buchaus on full display while continuing to build the hype around his forthcoming EP. The third single from the release is being released towards the end of next month so fans won’t have to wait long for their next dose of the alluring musical output of Vilhelm Buchaus.
Commenting on the single, he shares, “Dying Light is a song I wrote about growing up and longing for something more in life. I grew up in a small town and have always felt limited by the repetitive and safe everyday life that comes with it. Much of the longing for something else that I felt as a child has gone into the writing and inspired, among other things, this song.”
