Over the last five years, Cincinnati-based artist Catlea has been going from strength to strength in the music world, blending elements of alternative indie, rock, pop and electronic stylings into their unique music. Their distinctive sound is brought to life by a vocal range that swings from soft and soothing to commanding and powerful, backed by their proficiency in multiple instruments, including piano, guitar and ukulele.
This sonic formula has been a cornerstone of Catlea’s music since their explosive debut with the single “Breathe Away” in 2019. Over the years, Catlea has released ten international singles, produced in cities around the world such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, London, Barcelona and Bucharest, while their songs have racked up millions of streams and hundreds of thousands of YouTube views. Collaborations with artists like Alex Dark, Sasha Pavel, and STAR SEED have further broadened their reach and artistic output.
“Music is everything to me. It’s what motivates me every day,” Catlea shares. This passion shines brightly in their work, which is known for catchy, relatable and unique melodies paired with witty lyricism as Catlea aims to create music that connects with listeners on a personal level.
Their latest release, “Lying,” is an infectious and uplifting outing that showcases Catlea’s talent for crafting memorable pop anthems. Serving as the second single from their highly anticipated upcoming full-length record, Language Barrier, Catlea’s new single serves up an intoxicating dose of pop music brimming with memorable vocal hooks and danceable groove.
Kicked off by the flutter of funky guitar chords, Catlea’s voice enters with the soft click of percussive elements as the arrangement gently builds up around their voice. Building up throughout the song, the chorus launches into a rhythmic burst driven by pulsing bass lines and snapping drums, slick guitars and sensational vocal performance carrying addictive melodic leads.
Thematically, “Lying” addresses the emotional turmoil of dealing with an unfaithful lover. Catlea turns the tables on the situation, delivering a message of resilience and self-worth with lyrics that poignantly distil the sentiment; “I won’t do what you did—lie and cheat—but if I did, I would be happier because the love of a close friend is better than the lies of a gaslighting partner.” This empowering message is delivered with a blend of impassioned emotion and pure energy that makes the song at once relatable and inspiring.
Though only released in April, the track was perfected over the last three years, with Catlea working closely with producer Jason Boshoff, known for his work with Ed Sheeran, Josh Groban, David Gray and Rufus Wainwright. The recording took place in two locations: Room to Studios in Barcelona, Spain, and PLAY Audio in Cincinnati, Ohio where Catlea tracked their vocals. This bi-continental production effort has resulted in a shimmering track that with endless commercial appeal. In support of the new single, Catlea is embarking on a 42-show US Midwest tour, bringing their music to life on stage for fans across various venues.
