Brand new music duo coming out of San Diego, California, CultureFires is rapidly establishing itself as a unique and exciting offering in the indie electronic music scene. The duo, featuring the talents of Robb Urden and Robin Canfield, melts elements of indie, electronica house and techno into an enticing cocktail of electro-organic soundscapes.
Both classically trained musicians, the pair boast an impressive repertoire, playing over 25 instruments between them. This musicianship panache shines in their music, which deftly balances organic and electronic elements.
Robb Urden’s initial creative spark for CultureFires came after attending the legendary Burning Man and Envision Festival in 2023. Energised and profoundly inspired by these experiences, he went back into the studio after a hiatus, driven to create new material. Earlier this year,Robin Canfield joined the group, infusing their musical output with his own sonic flair and energy that significantly aplifies both their live performances and studio productions.
Making their official artistic debut, CultureFires brings us the first taste of their sound with the single “The Glow.” This track perfectly distils the duo’s blend of organic and electronic instrumentation, melodic vocal harmonies and pop-focused songwriting. The aptly titled track was inspired by Robb’s experiences at Burning Man, where he discovered a powerful sense of light, love and dance in the desert.
Setting an airy vibe with the pulse of a kick drum and softly shimmering synth textures, warm piano notes add delicate melody to the track before the vocals usher in a mellow dance-focused indie sound. Riding above the steady rhythm of staccato instrumental shots and shuffling instrumentation, the vocal add stunning melodic sweeps to craft a sound that’s at once a catchy alternative pop song as well as a euphoric dance music experience.
Developing with vibrant orchestral instrumental touches, hushed vocals sample shots and the rising swell of the punching beat, “The Glow” serves up a spectacular first outing from an exciting new musical endeavour. Firmly placing themselves on the map of must-watch acts for 2024 and beyond, we can’t wait to see what CultureFires has in store next during what’s sure to be their breakout year.
