Portsmouth-based Baby Said, an exciting new rock outfit fronted by Italian/Punjabi teenage sisters Veronica and Jess Pal, hit the music scene with their first official releases last year. However, the sisters’ musical journey has been a long time in the making, with Veronica picking up the acoustic guitar at six, inspired by church musicians and Jess starting on the guitar at four before transitioning to bass after witnessing MÃ¥neskin’s electrifying performance at Sanremo in 2021.
This formative experience not only influenced their musical direction but also inspired their band’s name, Baby Said, after their favourite Måneskin song. Then joined by Holly Knowles on rhythm guitar and backing vocals and Maddie Hackett on drums, Baby Said completed their lineup as a quartet.
Despite their youth, Veronica and Jess have performed over 200 gigs across the UK with their previous covers band, Astro Moda, showcasing their live performance panache. Signing with Big Hug Management and legendary booking agent Lucia Wade at ITB, the band has begun working with some of the UK’s leading indie rock and pop producers, including Gethin Pearson, known for his work with Bloc Party and Badly Drawn Boy.
Their debut singles, “Fight” and “You Killed It,” produced by Pearson, quickly put Baby Said on the map of rising acts in the UK music scene, earning spots on leading Apple Music playlists such as The New Rock and New In Roc’ across multiple countries. Kicking off 2024 with the new single “Mouth Shut,” they now bring us their debut EP titled WHO GIVES A ROCK, featuring four tracks that captures the perfect snapshot of their first chapter on their exciting musical story.
Opened by “Panic Attack,” the atmospheric pulses of bass notes is met by the laid back snap of drums as airy lead vocals spin soft melodic leads above. Rising with the crunch of electric guitar, a moody soundscape rises as the chorus launches into a raucous burst of uptempo charging drums and instantly catchy vocal hooks spinning poignant lyricism about the impact of experience panic attacks, reflected by the frenetic arrangement and relentless drive of drums and guitars.
“Mouth Shut” sets a bouncy groove of crunchy guitars and pop-focused vocal leads the ride the swell of instrumentation to serve up a gripping flurry of gritty guitars and pounding drums. Penned about the realisation of fading attraction when a romantic interest’s appeal dissipates with their vocalised thoughts, “Mouth Shut” delivers another high-octane outing of anthemic modern rock music.
Keeping up the energy with “You Killed It,” a song written in Wales during a spontaneous explosion of creativity, it’s a rousing punch of infectious rock music wrapped up in a potent two minute dose of swaggering vocals and angsty attitude. Closing the EP with debut single “Fight,” a raw rock groove of thumping drums propels this relentless rock stomper penned about their days on the road as a cover band. From start to finish, WHO GIVES A ROCK distils Baby Said’s epic modern rock sound into a blistering explosion of energising and memorable music that’s sure to win over scores of fans on what’s certain to be their break out year.
In support of the EP, the band is embarking on a UK tour kicking off tonight in their hometown. With shows in Southampton and London towards the end of July, the band will play in Blackpool, Leeds, Portsmouth and Reading throughout August, a lot at Loud Women Festival in London on 7th September before two October dates in Manchester and Middlesborough.
