Kristian Shelley is a UK-based producer operating under the Inwards alias, who’s consistently thrilled audiences with his unique blend of melodically-focused and emotive productions. Drawing on a mix of found sounds, modular synths and various electronic and acoustic instruments, Inwards crafts music that’s as playfully edgy as it is profoundly moving.
Since his emergence in the electronic music scene, Inwards has built a formidable reputation. His second album, Bright Serpent, was released in 2020 to critical acclaim and his work has earned praise by prominent publications such as Resident Advisor, The Independent and Clash. Inwards’ music has also enjoyed extensive radio support, with airtime on BBC 6 Music, Radio X, BBC Introducing and international stations like KCRW and NPR.
Known for his immersive live sets, often featuring a strong visual element, Inwards also brings us exciting sonic vision alive on stage. His latest single, “Moonscape,” marks the first in a series of new tracks to be released this summer on his own label, Rainbow Bridge Records.
The first of two new releases, Inwards shares, “This pair of tracks is about luck and misfortune. I started thinking about the whole concept of luck – is it subjective? Is it different, depending on what you believe in?” With “Moonscape, he serves up an exploration of dance-focused rhythms and intricate chiming synth textures that channels the aesthetics of artists like Four Tet and Pantha du Prince.
Flowing from the delicate rattle of percussive shots and softly pulsing synth textures, the track gently lifts with bouncy grooves to craft an experimental electronic sound that’s at once energising and restrained. Injecting rumbling energy with the patter of bass lines and tap of hi hats, “Moonscape” delivers an enveloping soundscape that sees Inwards continue to deliver his highly original sound brimming with creativity and wrapped in superb sound design.
