Based in Surrey in the south of the UK, musician Samuel Glen brings to life his sonic vision under the artistic banner Cargo Grey. Creating all his original material in his bedroom studio, over the last three years he’s been sharing his sound with the world while racking up over a hundred thousand steams of his music on Spotify alone.
First revealing his musical output on his debut single “Ferrari Red” in May 2021, he’s since shared multiple well-received singles and EPs over the years. Recently he’s been dropping a string of singles in the build up to his latest release, his brand new EP titled What’s Been Going On?. Bringing us the final single and title track from the EP, he now shares his song “What’s Been Going On?,” a song that revolves around themes of moving around, feeling unsettled in life and the pressures of not knowing where you are headed.
It also explores the feelings of inadequacy and judgment from family for not pushing forward, a poignant tale about being a late bloomer and the surrounding stigma. “What’s Been Going On?” thoughtfully presents these themes and wraps them in a dreamy indie rock sound.
The track shines with bright vocal melodies and airy instrumentation driven by the subtle snap of drums, resulting in a truly charming sound that’s at once upbeat and moving. Opened by the combination of hovering synth textures and delicate piano notes as Cargo Grey’s vocals spin elegant vocal melodies, the laid back punch of the beat injects a mellow energy before dropping back to softly tapped cymbals to craft a graceful rise and fall of sonic energy.
Capped by an alluring vocal performance carrying storytelling lyricism via memorable melodic lines, the song flows with the twang of slick guitar leads that weave among the artist’s voice. Building to an epic crescnedo of overlapping vocal layers to deliver a lofty finale, “What’s Been Going On?” delivers Cargo Grey’s superb songwriting talent and performance panache via an engaging and truly original sound.
