Based in Toronto, Tara Kannangara is a JUNO-nominated artist and second-generation Sri Lankan-Canadian whose music breaks free from genre confines and cultural expectations. With a unique blend of personal storytelling and experimental soundscapes, her work is marked by vibrant arrangements and compelling lyricism.
Her highly original sound has captured the attention of listeners around the world, compelling them to turn their heads and truly listen. Growing up in Chilliwack, British Ccolumbia, Tara spent her early years indulging in television, often dreaming of being a character in her favourite shows, intertwined with rigorous musical training.
Piano lessons, singing sessions and early morning band rehearsals saw her sonic passion ignite. However, it was her imaginative spirit and desire to create her own art that eventually led her to Toronto, where she pursued music at the University of Toronto after studying classical trumpet and voice at the University of Victoria.
Backed by her band of talented musicians, for almost a decade she’s been sharing her sonic vision since dropping her debut full-length record, Some Versions of the Truth, back in 2015. Dropping a string of well-received singles as well as her sophomore album, It’s Not Mine Anymore in 2019, she recently released her first EP, Extraordinary People.
Lifted from the EP, she brings us her new single titled “Lisa Turtle,” a sonic tribute to Lisa Turtle, a character from the 90s sitcom Saved By the Bell. Although Lisa wasn’t the main character, Tara believes she should’ve been and this sentiment drives the song’s main theme.
Brought in by the screech of guitar, the bold pulse of bass and snap of drums usher in Tara’s smooth vocal leads as she spins catchy melodic leads above the indie rock arrangement. Developing with piquant synth tones, the chorus launches a bright and instantly memorable sound of anthemic writing as the thump of bass propels the groove and Tara’s sensational vocal performance carries storytelling lyricism to deliver an infectious jam that showcases her songwriting talent and thoroughly original sonic output in spectacular.
