Montreal-based KROY is a Juno Award-winning alternative pop artist who’s thrilled audiences and tastemakers alike with her visionary sound and soaring vocals. Known for her bold pop explorations, KROY has lent her voice and lyrics to prominent producers like Apashe, Qrion, and Felix Cartal, as well as venturing into film scoring.
Sharing her solo sonic vision for a decade since the release of her debut EP in 2014 with Birthday, she’s since dropped multiple singles, a second EP and a full-length record. Now, ahead of her upcoming sophomore album, MILITIA, she brings us the lead single titled “SALTWATER.”
KROY’s music has always traversed dark and intriguing themes, and “SALTWATER” continues this trend. This track thematically revolves around the emotional aftermath of betrayal with KROY explaining, “It’s a song about meeting someone so special you give everything you are to them, and are convinced you’ve found the person for you. Only to be completely deceived and betrayed. Blood, sweat, tears. It’s just saltwater.” This poignant statement sets the tone for a track that deftly intertwines vulnerability and intensity.
Produced by Max Ant, who’s worked with the likes of DJ Snake, Brodinski and Ramengvrl, “SALTWATER” intricately flows between softness and power, reflecting the emotional duality KROY aims to convey. The track starts with delicate close-mic’ed vocals hovering over soft piano tones, drawing the listener in with memorable melodic leads before the punching rattle of drums ushers into a powerful eruption of driving synths and belted vocals to form a rousing and energising chorus.
The music video for “SALTWATER” is a visual extension of KROY’s lyrical universe with director Gerardo Alcaine sharing, “Camille reached out and said, ‘I want 3 IV bags.’ She then went on to explain that these 3 bags would represent the ‘blood, sweat, tears’ in the lyrics.” This conceptual imagery immediately ties into the song’s core themes with the video’s visuals complementing the song’s context, moving from calculated, almost sterile settings to chaotic, frenetic scenes that mirror the song’s explosive bridge, resulting in a gripping visual pairing for KROY’s epic new single.
