Danish pianist and composer Lucas Forch has already earned a stellar reputation in the neo-classical music scene at the age of just twenty-five. Despite playing piano since the age of six, he only began sharing his musical gifts with the world in the last three years. First capturing his sonic vision in the studio and unveiling his sound to the world in September 2021, he released his debut full-length record with the aptly titled album, Beginnings.
His musical journey didn’t stop there; since then, he’s continued to bring to life his stunning musical world across a series of singles, EPs and albums, often working with frequent collaborator Christian Holm-Svendsen while racking up tens of millions of plays of his music on Spotify alone. His style, built on by airy soundscape compositions performed solely on piano, offers the perfect soundtrack for undisturbed relaxation and reflection.
Now he brings us his latest release with the brand new six-track EP titled Goldcrest, linking up with Swedish producer Augsut Wanngren, who’s previously worked with the likes of Eik Octobre and Nils Frahm. Recorded on an upright felted piano and wrapped with ambient reverbs, Lucas and Eik have achieved a sound that’s heartfelt and soulful, offering the perfect distillation of the latest chapter in Lucas Forch’s musical story.
His performance throughout Goldcrest is tender and sensitive, with the round and warm sound of the felted piano creating an inviting and intimate atmosphere. Starting off the EP with “Oktober,” the muted tones of soft piano lines flutter in a balletic dance to craft a dreamy and beautiful piece that’s at once simplistic and engaging.
“Mistral” follows with a subtly lilting bounce as the hushed bass notes allow the melodic leads to form a spellbinding atmosphere via sparse accent notes to delicate tumbles. “Kalliopi” presents a soothing dance of elegant instrumental composition, as the flourishes of notes combine to form an ethereal sound.
With “Cosmogram” Lucas Forch’s classical inspirations echo in this dazzling composition that shows both his performance panache as well as his restraint in maintaining the minimal structures which make his sound so charming. “Satsuma” offers a playful and upbeat sound where intricate flickers of lead notes add dashes of soft energy throughout.
Closing the EP with “Little Wave,” Lucas crafts the perfect finale with a graceful and moving piece that invites the listener to a peaceful place via the silky ebb and flow of the performance. Across Goldcrest, Lucas Forch delivers a spectacular exploration of modern classical piano-focused music as he continues to confirm his status as a pioneering figure in the neo-classical music sphere and we can’t wait to hear next magical musical moments he shares.
