Originally hailing from Alingsås near Gothenburg and now based in Stockholm, musician Louise Lindberg makes music under the alias Lucky Lou. No stranger to success in the music world, she’s previously collaborated with high-profile artists such as Benjamin Ingrosso, Astrid S, NOTD, David Guetta, Galantis, Icona Pop, Ofenbach and Zara Larsson. Her songwriting talents have contributed to hits such as Armin Van Buuren’s “One More Time,” which topped the US Dance Radio Chart, and the track “2 Baddies” from NCT 127’s album, earning her first number-one on the US Billboard Chart.
Stepping out as a solo artist this year, last month she made a compelling artistic statement with her debut single “Space” which was quickly followed up by sophomore track “Leave Me Alone.” Now she continues to ride a wave of creative momentum with her brand new debut EP, the five-track release titled Dance Melancholia, released via the TEN Music Group imprint which is home to the likes of Zara Larsson, Icona Pop, Benjamin Ingrosso, Elliphant and more.
Due in part to the unpredictable nature of artistic creation, the EP almost never come to fruition. It was born out of a creative spark and spontaneous desire to learn music production on a new computer, leading to a fresh project within a few months. This unplanned yet blossoming journey reflects the honest, authentic expression found in the EP and marks the latest chapter in Lucky Lou’s exciting musical story.
“The whole thing was just an experiment I thought I would fail. Instead, a new door opened, allowing me to express myself more broadly. I fell in love with creating something from scratch and learning to trust the process. It became a journey through myself via creation, which helped me gain insight into how I felt and thought about certain things,” she shares.
The EP recounts the story of a romantic relationship’s rise and fall, presented in reverse order. Each song serves as a diary entry, capturing different stages of a complex and passionate love affair. Opened by “Leave Me Alone,” Lucky Lou’s silky vocals glide over soft synth textures, crafting an ambient pop sound that gently rises with the uptempo punch of the beat before the chorus erupts with soaring vocal leads, driving synths and drum and bass rhythms. With poignant, confessional lyricism carried via stunning vocal delivery and memorable melodies, the first track serves up a catchy dose of exhilarating dance pop.
Debut single “Space” offers a dreamy blend of airy electronic instrumentation as Lucky Lou’s dazzling voice drifts above before the abrupt kick of the beat injects a snapping groove. With an exquisite blend of lively energy and atmospheric aesthetic threaded with blissful melodic writing, it’s another superb display of Lucky Lou’s knack for creating a highly original sound that still has bags of wide appeal.
“Thoughts” sees her dive further into her emotive sonic vision with expressive vocals and a shimmering synth arrangement casting an enchanting sonic spell brimming with soulful. Gradually swelling throughout, the subtle patter of percussive elements and elegant layers of vocals combine to form an immersive listening experience.
On “Tears” she presents an infectious synth pop anthem driven by the steady punch of drums that drop out to give way to hazy moments of floating vocals and slick ebb and flow. With a bold chorus of danceable rhythm and vibrant synth lines that weave among her vocal leads, it’s a stellar jam that puts Lucky Lou’s spectacular songwriting and performance panache on full show.
Closing the EP with focus track “C’est La Vie,” the artist distils her perspective of the broken relationship with an epic electronic pop outing. Packed full of thumping rhythm and stuttered vocal processing cut with interludes of graceful melodic leads and reflective lyrical writing, the track provides the perfect finale to Lucky Lou’s sensational debut EP as a solo artist to firmly place her on the map of must-watch artists on the rise.
Commenting on the finale track, she offers, “C’est La Vie is about being left by someone you thought you would spend your life with. The sorrow of being involuntarily alone and accepting a definitive end to something you don’t want to be without. The EP begins with the end and ends with the beginning of the same love story. Each song is a flashback to how you ended up where you are.”
