Originally coming from the Thames estuary coastal town of Southend-on-Sea and now based in London, First Day Of Spring is a five-piece outfit led by the songwriting talents of Samuel Jones. The band, which includes members previously involved in various musical projects such as The Bellybuttons, Velvet Morning, Rocket Ship TV and Mr. Yolk, brings a varied history of musical exploration to their current endeavour, combining to bring to life their shared sonic vision.
First Day Of Spring’s music covers a wide range of themes, from intricate storytelling to immersive soundscapes. The band draws influence from a wide array of artists, including Sparklehorse, Spiritualized, Modest Mouse, Silver Jews, Sonic Youth, The Clean, Cleaners From Venus and Cocteau Twins. Whether euphoric and joyous or gentle and melancholic, their main aim is to transport listeners out of their own reality and evoke genuine emotion.
First unveiling their sound in 2022 via their debut single “Stupid,” they dropped a string of received tracks in the build up to their first EP, Fly Over Apple Blossom, last year. Now they follow up their debut EP and return this year with a brand new single titled “You’re Blue I’m Blue,” a track that explores the themes of tribes and the potential for harmonious coexistence among them.
Thematically, “You’re Blue I’m Blue” explores the potential for differing groups of people to coexist peacefully. It’s a timely theme, reflecting the current social landscape where division is often more visible than unity.
Wrapped in a hazy shoegaze-inflected rock sound that channels the 90s aesthetic of bands like Smashing Pumpkins, with “You’re Blue I’m Blue, the band presents a lilting jam full of washy guitar tones, laid back drums and smooth vocal leads. With delicate rise and fall, the verses slip from airy atmosphere to lofty, hook-driven choruses to craft an enveloping sound that captures a timeless appeal filtered through the band’s own modern sonic lens. It’s a superb showcase of their songwriting skill, originality and performance panache as they continue to deliver compelling music that’s sure to connect with fans across the UK and beyond.
