MICKEY B is a promising newcomer in London’s indie rock scene, blending his Italian-American heritage with a wealth of experiences garnered from his travels across Europe and beyond. Now based in London, he channels his journey into his music, offering a subjective and storytelling lens through which to explore his experiences via poignant lyricism and a highly unique sound.
As a producer and multi-instrumentalist, MICKEY B brings a varied set of skills to his creative output, even teaching piano to support his artistic endeavours. In May, he unveiled his sonic vision under the MICKEY B name for the first time, releasing his debut three-track EP titled Dry Lands.
With his first release, MICKEY B offered a deeply personal exploration of the space between slavery and freedom, distilling significant moments of life as he’s lived it with pure emotion and authenticity. The release served as an autobiographical journey, with each song painting a vivid and confessional picture of the desert landscape that exists within the human soul.
Now he’s back with the follow up, bringing us his sophomore release with another three-track EP titled letters to my past. This time, the artist stretches his songwriting wings to deliver an imaginative journey into a past relationship, a concept that reframes his highly original sound in a completely new setting.
The soft strums of acoustic guitar get proceedings underway on “One-Way Road To Mars” as the arrangement tumbles into a grooving acoustic rock jam where danceable rhythms, funk-infused guitar flickers and pulsing bass lines all collide to back up his soulful vocal leads. Painting a transportive picture via silky melodies and gentle rise and fall, it’s a superb jam that sees MICKEY B continue to explore his compelling sonic vision.
“Flavour Of Your Hair” follows, jumping straight into a melancholic sound of warm guitars, the rattle of drums and subtly haunting vocal melodies. Shifting to a lullaby-esque aesthetic with the chimes of keys, the song fuses incredibly diverse and contrasting moments, all tied together by the stellar vocal performance of Mickey.
Finally, “this morning I woke up without you” thematically completes the EP’s storyline where MICKEY B demonstrates his panache as a singer-songwriter with his impassioned vocals backed by the brick strums of his guitar. In this stripped back setting, rolling drums inject energy for a rhythmic finale as Mickey delivers a commanding vocal performance that makes you feel every emotion with him, a true hallmark of a talented singer-songwriter and we can’t wait to see what his musical adventure with produce next.
