West London-born singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ren Ashfield has always been a strong advocate of rock music’s timeless appeal. After an initial stint with local bands, Ashfield moved to Treviso in Italy, where he continued to immerse himself in the music scene, recording three original rock albums.
His impressive career includes sharing the stage with Deep Purple legends Ian Paice and Don Airey, showcasing his profound influence and talents in the rock genre. In 2018, Ren Ashfield formed his own outfit, Ren Ashfield and the Magicians, a rock ensemble featuring Tolo Marton on guitar, Andrea Tombesi on bass, and Charlie Bonazza on drums.
They debuted with the album Cover Me Quick in 2019. Following some lineup changes, most notably with Alex De Rosso replacing Tolo Marton on guitar and Massimo Fantinelli taking over bass duties, the band has continued to develop their sound and win over fans along the way. Their latest album, Sonic Creations, released in March this year, perfectly captures their ability to blend genres and deliver powerful musical experiences.
The new single lifted from the record, “Mama Nature,” is a prime example of this versatility and ambition. “Mama Nature,” tailored for radio with a succinct edit, trimming the original expansive version to a more accessible three and a half minute length without losing its core sound, is a poignant reflection on modern humanity’s disconnection from Mother Earth, urging a return to a more harmonious relationship with our planet.
Opened by fuzzy radio broadcast samples, sweeping instrumental tones ushers in the lively arrangement up punching drums before slipping into a grooving rock outing. Ren’s smooth vocals enter above the pulse of bass, shuffling drums and funk-inflected guitar work, delivering profound lyricism that tracks the devastation of our impact on the planet.
Rising to an epic chorus, his commanding vocals soar above punching instrumental energy lifted by dashes of piano, the vibrant organ tones and slick lead guitar licks, resulting in a catchy rock jam instilled with an important message. It’s a superb demonstration of Ren Ashfield’s songwriting talent and the talent of his band to bring their shared sonic vision to life in a spectacular rock setting.
