Dutch trio RÊVERIE, featuring the talents of singer and guitarist Sara-Devika Matyus, bassist Anna Lilith Weber and drummer Stein Petit, is making an inpmact in the Amsterdam music scene and beyond with their bold, genre-breaking sound. Known for their energetic and emotionally charged music, this all-girl pop-focused band is making strides in both and fashion, creating a fresh and genreless movement that’s entirely their own.
Their music is a vessel for emotional expression, often exploring themes of mental health, dreams, visions and personal struggles, particularly those of their frontwoman, Sara-Devika Matyus. Making an entrance in 2019 with the debut single “iiii,” singles two and three followed the next year before their 2021 debut EP, live to see endless.
After a brief hiatus from sharing their music, this year has seen them returning with new material via the singles “one heart” and end of the world,” they now continue this creative momentum with their brand new single titled “sinner,” a perfect distillation of their sonic ethos of emotional and visual artistic expression.
“sinner” thematically covers the interplay of temptation and longing, with lyrics that paint a picture of passion and internal conflict. Enshrined in the chorus, “she sins like the devil, her heart’s like an angel,” captures the duality of the song’s central figure, a person whose charm and danger are equally intoxicating.
Ultimately, “sinner” is about someone who has lost their way, resorting to self-destructive behaviours as a coping mechanism despite having a fundamentally good heart. This context is brought to life through Sara-Devika’s dazzling songwriting, drawing from her own experiences with mental health and personal struggles. “I dated a woman who left a strong impression on me. We barely dated because she pushed everyone away as soon as she got close. Her relationships were always brief and extreme,” she shares.
Wrapped up in a brisk 94 second outing, “sinner” cuts straight to the core with Sara-Devika’s breathy vocals casting a mesmeric spell as the soft rhythmic pulse and electronic textures rise around her voice. Building into a subtly dance-focused outing, likely beats and bright synths collide to deliver a thrilling listening experience that leaves you wanting more.
