Producer To The Tide has always believed music can take you on a journey without a single step or tell a story without a single word. This philosophy is at the core of his musical adventure, aiming to use sound and evoke deep emotional landscapes. Also operating under the alias Silk Static, where he explores the darker, more bass-driven side of electronic music, To The Tide continues to innovate within the electronic music scene.
Currently living a nomadic lifestyle in a van travelling around Western Canada, To The Tide’s ever-shifting environment mirrors the fluidity and constantly shifting nature of his music. First unveiling the To The Tide moniker five years ago, he made his debut with the single “Aphasia” in 2019. Since then, he’s dropped multiple singles, two EPs, and his debut record, Reverie, in March this year. His music has won over fans worldwide, racking up hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify alone.
Now, To The Tide takes us back to the very start of his musical journey with a remix of xxyyxx’s track “About You,” a song that played a pivotal role in shaping his electronic music career. “I genuinely wouldn’t be making electronic music if it wasn’t for this song, so I had to put my own spin on it,” he shares. This remix serves as a homage to the track that first opened his mind to the limitless possibilities of electronic music.
To The Tide first encountered the original song while in high school, during his time in a rock band. Initially skeptical of computer-generated music, he was forced to isolate for a month due to mononucleosis. During this time, he began experimenting with DAWs to record demos, which quickly turned into a passion for creating entire songs within the software. This period of isolation and creativity profoundly changed his perception of electronic music, showing him that it wasn’t limited to dance music but could be an expansive, emotive art form.
Taking the glistening synth textures, snapping beats, processed vocals and hazy aesthetic of the original, To The Tide delivers his own reimagined version. Adding his own chord structures and layering up an array of synths, his remix pays a touching tribute to the original that so profoundly redefined his own musical story, while reframing it in his own dazzling way.
Gradually brought in by the soft flutter os hushed synth tones and stuttered and spliced vocal elements, the beat ushers in a downtempo slice of electronica that’s at once hypnotic and energising. The contrast of instrumental timbres, pitched vocal elements and shifting rhythms all collide to craft an engrossing listening experience that sees this artist come full circle, returning to his early inspirations to reinterpret the music though a completely new sonic lens.
