Nuno Freitas is an exciting talent originally from the Portuguese island of Madeira who’s been making a name for himself in the music sphere with his blend of pop-focused songwriting and meaningful lyrics. Growing up surrounded by the natural beauty of Madeira, Nuno found early inspiration in the island’s landscapes and tranquil atmosphere. However, it was his passion for music, particularly the works of icons like Lana Del Rey, Troye Sivan and Lady Gaga, that truly set him on his artistic adventure. His journey began on YouTube, where he shared covers of his favourite songs.
The overwhelmingly positive response he received motivated him to take his talents more seriously, prompting a move to London where he could further develop his own sonic vision. There, he studied music at university, focusing on songwriting and performance, while also exploring themes close to his heart such as love, desire, queerness and hope. Nuno first made his mark in 2019 with the release of his debut single, “Blue,” which was followed by several more singles, including breakout track “Swimming Pool” and “Arcadia,” amassing millions of streams online. Nuno has achieved all of this independently, without the backing of a major label or publisher, attesting to his his talent and determination.
Now, Nuno Freitas opens a new chapter in his musical story with the release of his debut EP, The Summer of Love. This collection of sic songs offers a deeper exploration of the themes that have become central to his work. As the title suggests, The Summer of Love is a celebration of love, desire and the emotions that come with them. It’s a tribute to the joys of summer, the magic of falling in love and the courage it takes to embrace one’s feelings fully.
Co-written with his long-time collaborator Fiorenzo Palermo, the songs on The Summer of Love are a stellar showcase of Nuno’s growth as both a songwriter and a performer. The production, handled by a host of talented producers forms a sound that shines with the wide appeal pop but with a genuine, heartfelt core. Opening the EP with “Peaches,” soft, lo-fi vocal touches glide over the rising swell of instrumentation before the song settles into a grooving indie pop jam. Packed full of lightly punchy rhythm, pulsing basslines and vibrant arrangement, Nuno’s silky voice floats above to thread catchy melodies into the charming sonic fabric.
Title-track “The Summer of Love” slows things down with a delicate sound of laid back rhythm, airy instrumental flourishes and smooth vocal leads. Creating a truly delightful bop that’s memorable and heartwarming in equal measure, it’s an alluring outing that draws on his superb songwriting and ability to craft unique arrangements. With songs like “Trust,” Nuno delivers an elegant blend of snapping drums and shimmering tones capped by his inviting vocals as he reels off infectious melodic lines above. It’s the perfect example of the artist taking inspiration from his influences and filtering them through his own modern musical lens.
The EP’s lead single “My Youth” distils ideas of surrendering yourself to love and wraps them in a mellow soundscape of gentle acoustic guitar and atmospheric percussion. Building the track up into an anthemic ballad style piece, the intricate ebb and flow of the arrangement is stitched with his emotive vocal performance to offer a dazzling highlight on the release.
“Written in the Stars” presents more of Nuno’s moving songwriting style with an R&B-tinged outing built on pulsing percussion and velvety synth stretches. With a hushed vocal style that carries the weight of the emotionally-charged lyricism, his soulful voice hovers above the instrumentation to cast a spellbinding musical experience.
With the final song, Nuno looks to another one of his influences with a cover of “All I Wanna Do” by The Beach Boys. Taking the original track and bringing it to life in his own musical style, he lays down an upbeat finale of danceable rhythms, twanging guitar tones and beautiful vocal work to offer a magical finale to his sensational debut EP.
