Philippe Del Bosque is no stranger to the music world. Known for his work with Tribu Oro, Philippe has spent years developing his sound and drawing from a web of global sounds. Now, under the Philippe Del Bosque name, he channels these influences into a personal and enveloping body of work.
Unveiling this project in March last year, Philippe first introduced listeners to his unique sonic world with the debut singles “Oor” and “What Next.” Followed up by a further three tracks, he now brings us the perfect snapshot of the Philippe Del Bosque sound with his debut EP, the aptly titled Looking East.
Presenting a five-track journey that captures the perfect snapshot of his artistic vision, Looking East is a reflection of the sounds and feelings that have been simmering in Philippe’s mind for years. The title itself suggests a contemplative gaze towards distant horizons, both literal and metaphorical. Philippe’s music has always been defined by its global outlook and this release is no different. Drawing from his deep affinity for ethnic sounds and electronica, Looking East is an excercise in blending traditional influences with modern electronic music.
The EP’s genesis is as fascinating as the music itself, brought about by Philippe’s collaboration with singer Sofia Upton, who provided the vocal samples that sparked the entire project. The vocals, whether they are front and centre or stitched into the background of the tracks, add a haunting, ethereal quality to the music. They serve as a bridge between the ancient and the modern, the known and the unknown.
Opened by “Swell,” the EP slips the listener into a distant musical sphere with the meditative patter of rhythms and chiming tones. Peppered with the eerie dashes of impassioned vocal samples, the track develops throughout, gradually introducing more textures and the restrained stomp of the beat.
On “Sans Parapluie,” he links with Sofia Lorena to craft an immersive musical world where the delicate pulse of synths and stretches of strings are met with the intricate clicks of percussive shots. Once again smoothly rising to a mesmeric rhythm grounded by a steady beat, the track delivers another dose of his expansive creativity and superb sound design flair.
Tracks like “Organicos” injects a haziness with the soft collision of pulsing synth tones and piano notes riding the mellow rattle of the beat. Title track “Looking East” offers perhaps the best example of Philippe Del Bosque visionary collaboration with Sofia Upton as her airy vocal tones snake through a dark soundscape of deep bass tones, clacking percussion, smokey sonic textures and the haunting dance of flute notes.
Closing the EP with “Textures,” working once again with Sofia Lorena, the producer crafts one final dive into a hypnotic exploration of new musical pastures. As Sofia’s voice threads through a dark blend of winding synth lines and slick drums, the smooth rise and fall of sonic energy delivers an epic finale to the artist’s sensational debut EP under his own name.
