New artist richard peril fascia is an enigmatic figure whose sound is as hazy as his artistic identity. Stepping out as a solo artist, in June he released his debut single “cowboy music” and offered the first taste of his highly original musical vision.
Now returning with his latest outing, he brings us his brand new EP titled perfect richard, serving up six brief tracks that provide an exciting run through of his sonic output. With an innovative approach that involved stacking layers of tape and using bouncing techniques while recording, he captured the grainy aesthetic that defines his own unique sound.
Playing on the recent and rising phenomena of our increasingly curtailed attention spans, the main concept behind the EP was to distil the short, snappy catchiness of pop music filtered through his highly original creative lens. Fully mixed and mastered with analogue equipment, perfect richard distils the feel of retro pop while his original songwriting and arrangement reframe it in a completely new way.
Kicked off with his debut single “cowboy music,” bright tones are met with the rising swell of lively guitar plucks and the charge of uptempo drums capped by his soft vocal leads that ping around the mix to cast a spacey spell throughout the track. Blending elements of folk, indie and pop and wrapping them in his experimental style, it’s a lively and catchy jam that’s memorable and unique in equal measure.
“computer girls” follows and sees the artist lean into a psychedelic vibe with splashy drums, jangly guitar tones and fuzzy vocals while still retaining a cohesive flow on the EP. With “boss,” the beat-driven sound of abstract vocalisations and pulsing bass lines combine to form a slick interlude piece that further explores the weird and wonderful sound the artist brings to life.
Songs like “bigger muscles” pair dreamy instrumentation with a deep vocal style to craft a charm sound of memorable melodic elements cut with the angular screech of guitar leads. “king of rap” presents a downtempo intro of soft basslines before the arrangement rises with the shuffle of drums and alternation between echoing vocals and the twang of guitar.
Closing the EP with the minute-long “portrait of elizabeth,” richard peril fascia brings the release to a conclusion with a stripped back instrumental piece of plodding bass tones and gentle chime of plucked notes. From start to finish, the artist delivers a delightful listening experience across his debut EP via an intriguing and kaleidoscopic sound that stitches accessible melodic writing into a sonic fabric that’s at once vivid and foggy.
