Hailing from Iceland, Luthersson is an award-winning artist making his own brand of R&B-inflected alternative pop. He previously operated under the moniker Auður, pronounced ‘author,’ transitioning from his work in Icelandic hardcore and noise-rock bands to electronic music after seeing James Blake perform live in 2013.
Over the last decade, he’s delivered an incredible catalogue of music across an array of singles, EPs and records while clocking millions of streams online. Winning over fans and earning recognition for his work, he’s won nine Iceland Music Awards to date.
Now based in Los Angeles, he’s recently stepped out under a new alias, using his own surname, Luthersson, as an artistic banner. First revealing the new chapter in March with the single “I Can Always Picture You” and following a successful nationwide tour of Iceland, he’s back in California to release new material.
Bringing us his latest release, he shares the brand new single titled “Reel In,” a song that’s based on detachment as a defensive response in the wake up of a relationship ending. Crafting an emotive sound with downtempo piano notes and soft lo-fi aesthetics, Luthersson’s voice enters to thread moving melodies via hushed delivery.
Gently building the energy with sparse percussive taps, the flutter of intricate acoustic guitar notes tumble to usher in the punch of the beat as the song slips into a slick R&B groove. Packed full of hazy atmosphere, memorable melodies and poignant lyricism, Luthersson casts an immersive sound with a shifting arrangement of deep bass textures, snapping rhythms and airy instrumental dashes that pepper the track with brightness. It’s a stunning showcase of his original songwriting and gripping sound as he continues to leave his mark on the modern musical landscape.
