Hailing from outside of Boston and now based in Brooklyn, alternative pop artist Julesy has been crafting songs since she was young, using music as a means to process her thoughts and emotions. In 2020, during the first wave of lockdowns, Julesy found herself in an reflective spiral, far removed from her acting school routine.
Her creative instincts took over, and she began shaping her experiences into a collection of music that would eventually become her debut EP, This Current Self-Intervention, which arrived in 2021. Since then, she’s continued to develop her sound, taking influence from artists like Caroline Polachek and The Japanese House, blending her unique take on pop with storytelling lyrics.
Returning this year after signing to the Strong Place Music imprint with the first updated recording on the single “Mouthing Words,” she now brings us her latest release with the new version of “Left Behind.” The new recoding on the track offers a fresh window into her evolving sound. Originally written shortly after she graduated from college, “Left Behind” was born out of a period of intense uncertainty and disconnection.
As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted her post-graduation life, Julesy, like so many young adults, struggled to find a sense of belonging or purpose. The song distils the feeling of being adrift, questioning your choices and confronting your own sense of self, resulting in an anthem for anyone who has ever felt lost in transition.
Flowing from the bubbling synth intro, the strike of drums adds a steady rhythm as soft guitars set the backdrop for Julesy’s expressive vocals. Spinning instantly catchy, lively melodies, the track serves up a charming alternative indie sound that sees Julesy deliver a stunning showcase of her unique songwriting and vocal talents in an updated version of this epic jam. Paired with the single is her first official music video which features Julesy performing the song alongside her band cut with scenes that play out in woodland settings to form an engaging visual accompaniment for the music.
