Over the years, Klô Pelgag has become a celebrated artist in the Quebec and Canadian music scenes, known for her innovative artistic vision and bold exploration of life through song. With an impressive collection of accolades, including 20 Félix Awards at the ADISQ Galas, a JUNO Award and nominations for the Polaris Music Prize, Klô Pelgag has been going from strength to strength on her decorated musical journey.
Her collaborations with artists like CRi, Patrick Watson, Pomme and Mika, as well as performances across North America, Europe and Japan, further speak to her status as one of the most compelling voices in francophone music today. For over a decade she’s been sharing her groundbreaking sonic output, earning critical acclaim and racking up millions of spins of her music.
Her previous album, Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs, was hailed by critics as one of the standout records of 2020. Outside of Canada, the record struck a chord with audiences and critics in France, as well as making an impression with listeners and tastemakers in the USA. Now, Klô Pelgag is preparing to dazzle fans once again with her upcoming record Abracadabra.
Released just ahead of the album, her new single “Le goût des mangues” presents a track that explores themes of time, nature and innocence. Accompanied by a cinematic music video directed by her long-time collaborator Laurence BAZ Morais, the visual experience offers a tender and intimate glimpse into Klô’s personal world. The video features moments with her young daughter, which creates a poignant context to pair with the song’s poetic lyrics. Morais, explaining his creative vision said, “I aimed to visually translate her poetry by creating a surreal tableau that blends the personal and universal. Including her daughter allowed me to capture a sense of childlike innocence and a connection to nature that resonates deeply with Klô’s musical universe.”
Brought in by the delicate plinks of piano notes as airy vocalisations echo, Klô’s hushed vocal leads drift above the elegant arrangement as soft strings are met with the subtly spacey zap of synth tones. Flowing with blissful melodies and graceful vocal performance, with “Le goût des mangues,” Klô Pelgag presents a truly stunning slice of her thoroughly original and utterly spellbinding musical output.
The track, described by Klô as a reflection on the passing of time and the ways in which the seasons affect us, is filled with lyrical nuance and beauty. “The season is a weapon one must learn to beware of,” she says, evoking the themes of change, growth and the delicate balance of life that runs throughout her music. With her next LP set to drop tomorrow, it’s clear that Klô Pelgag remains a powerful voice in modern music and we can’t wait to see what the release has in store.
