Vienna-based trio Lucy Dreams is a visionary project in modern music brought to life via a blend of analogue and digital artistic expression through collaboration between humans and AI. The project features Lucy, an artificial band member who works alongside human counterparts Zero and One, creating a new genre they describe as SonicWaveArtPop.
Their music is not only a sensory explosion but also a conceptual exploration of how technology and human creativity can merge, offering a window into the future of artistic collaboration. First unveiling their groundbreaking sonic vision and pioneering sound in 2020 with the debut single “Endless,” they’ve since shared multiple well-received releases including their full-length record, Götterfunken.
Going from strength to strength with each move, they’ve won over fans around the world and earned critical acclaim. Following an exhilarating string of performances in Canada, Lucy Dreams took the stage at the Waves Festival in Vienna. Their performance at this iconic event earned them the XA Award, presented by an international jury who were dazzled by the band’s bold artistic output and magnetic live presence.
Their latest release is a cover of the hit Arctic Monkeys track “Do I Wanna Know,” which sees them re-imagine the beloved song in their own enthralling way. The decision to cover this particular track was inspired by the band’s connection with Sheffield, the Arctic Monkeys’ hometown. As Zero from Lucy Dreams explains, “You just build up a relationship with a city, and with Sheffield, it’s a super exciting relationship. Then the idea came up to cover a song by a local band to put this special relationship with the city to music. The song also made its debut in Sheffield.”
Brought in by the zap of synth textures, the track flows with pulsing tones and immersive sonic atmosphere, crafting a wholly enveloping soundscape as the familiar guitar riff enters. Threading the vocals via airy delivery, the swell of synth elements swirl around the lead voice as percussive shots build the anticipation and a stretched pre-chorus raises the tension, ethereal vocals serve up a dreamy chorus before the crunch of the guitar and punch of the beat see the arrangement take flight.
With subtle intensity and engrossing sound design, Lucy Dreams reframes the original song in their own spectacular sound. It’s a stunning showcase of their ability to take existing music and present it in a thoroughly gripping fashion as they continue to share their truly original and compelling music with the world.
