Based in Bari, Italy, Nother is the solo project of Stefano Milella, an accomplished producer, drummer and composer whose artistic journey spans years of collaboration across various fields of music and film. With an impressive background in scoring for major documentaries on networks like National Geographic and the History Channel, as well as composing soundtracks for films such as South is Nothing, Only for the Weekend, and There is a Light, Stefano has demonstrated his ability to craft engrossing soundscapes across various mediums.
After building a strong foundation as a performer and composer, he decided to embark on a personal artistic journey, creating Nother to explore music on his own terms. His decision to create Nother came after the loss of a close friend, a turning point in his life that sparked the desire to channel his emotions into a project that was solely his own. Drawing from his years of experience in both electronic music and film scoring, Nother was born as a way to express the deep personal connection he has with music.
Unveiling the project in 2021 with the debut single “The Distance,” Nother quickly established himself as a distinct voice in the electronic music scene, combining the artist’s unique atmospheric production with an emotional undercurrent that’s struck a chord with listeners. Since delivering several well-received releases across singles, remixes, EPs and the album Future Is Bright in 2021, his music is an original fusion of cinematic soundscapes and electronic beats, a combination that reflects his background in composing for film while also exploring the expressive potential of electronic music.
Now, Nother brings us his latest project, the EP Phobos, an exploration of time, memory and fear. This contemporary dance performance was created in collaboration with French choreographers Labotilar and Italian artist Eilena D, with the support of the Ballet National de Marseille. Inspired by the works of surrealist painter Salvador Dali and artist Giorgio de Chirico, Phobos frames the subjective sensation of the passage of time, stitching together dark, atmospheric music with gripping choreography. Premiering at KLAP Maison pour la Danse in Marseille on May 4th, Phobos is currently touring across Europe, dazzling audiences with its innovative blend of music and movement.
The EP for Phobos features six tracks, kicked off with “Birth” where an intense atmosphere of pulsing textures and the ominous swell of synth tones casts an immersive soundscape that gradually glides into a dreamy scene of soft melodic stretches and airy sounds. “The Light” follows with chanted vocalisations, layering up to craft an arresting a cappella piece that presents a beautiful and minimalistic composition.
“Flapping” offers an abstract sound of rustling sonic elements and brooding fabric while “The Table” features dark orchestral flutters of strings and cinematic moments of powerful arrangement to deliver a bold musical sphere. “Family” serves up a beat driven sound with rumbling bass tones and downtempo percussive shots that develops into an enveloping slice of moody avant-garde electronic music. Closing the EP, “Solo” delivers an enchanting sound of delicate instrumental chimes as soft waves of synth textures rise and fade, offering a hypnotic and spellbinding finale to this sensational multi-media project from Nother and his collaborators.
