Australian producer Willaris. K, the moniker of Jack McAllister, has been making an impact in the electronic music world over the last few years. His unique sound fuses the intensity of Jon Hopkins and Flying Lotus with the emotive intimacy of composers like Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds. Add to that the measured restraint of Bonobo and Clark, and you get a sonic fabric that balances atmospheric beauty with pulsating energy.
Willaris. K’s journey through music has positioned him as one of Australia’s most innovative electronic artists, beven catching the attention of the electronic music elite, supporting acts like Seekae and George Fitzgerald before his first official releases. He first burst onto the music scene in 2017 when he released a remarkable twelve-minute short film by Yeoseop Yoon that accompanied his first trio of tracks; “Alchemy,” “River Song” and “Dour Nights.”Â
Since then he’s gone from strength to strength, releasing multiple well-received singles, remixes and records while collaborating with a range of different artists. Now he brings us a taste of the latest chapter in his thrilling musical story with the brand new track titled “Drama On The Edge,” the opening song from his new five-track EP of the same name.
This time linking up with Hxxd Gxld, with this track, Willaris. K delivers a dance-focused alternative pop jam cut with hip hop vibes. Brought in by the soft shimmer of synth tones and atmospheric textures, airy vocalisations are met by the shuffle of the beat as the energy builds before taking on a laid back dance aesthetic.
With the mellow vocals floating above the arrangement, spinning melodic rapped flows, the snap of the drums injects a subtle intensity as the stab of the synths adds to the infectious rhythm. Presented via intricate sound design, “Drama On The Edge” delivers a superb balance of energising sound and dreamy, mesmeric quality. Once again showcasing his highly original sound and knack for collaboration, it’s a stellar new jam from an artist who continues to serve up exciting, innovative music.
