Coming out of Lewisham in the UK, MHY is an independent artist and producer with a clear mission; to bring his creative vision to life by being fully immersed in every step of the creative process. Heavily inspired by British rap legend Giggs, MHY grew up listening to the pioneering sounds that shaped the UK music scene.
Now, heâs using those influences to craft an alternative hip hop sound thatâs entirely his own. Having faced significant mental health struggles in his earlier years, he found comfort and purpose in music. The global pandemic, though a time of profound difficulty, became a turning point for the artist. It was during this time of reflection and creation that MHY discovered not only his sound but also his strength.
Now MHY has made his official debut with “Trendsetter,” a track that opens the first window into his distinct sonic vision. Paying homage to Giggs, the song incorporates elements of the veteran rapperâs unique flow and lyricism, tying MHYâs influences to his own style.
The trackâs journey began during the pandemic when MHY first created its beat, saving it for the right moment to transform it into a full-fledged single. That moment arrived during a holiday to Cyprus, where inspiration struck, and the lyrics for “Trendsetter” came to life.
Opened by bright instrumental pips, MHY’s laid back vocals glide in as the rattle of the beat sets the rhythmic energy. With slick rap flows, he crafts a grooving sound while the spacey sound design and intricate instrumentation forges an engaging arrangement from start to finish.
It’s a superb showcase of his creativity, songwriting and vocal delivery, marking his entrance with an exciting sound that’s original and memorable in equal measure. With his sophomore single “Hotstepper” set to drop next month, MHY is sure to win over fans across the UK and beyond with his forward-thinking hip hop sound.
We caught up with MHY to find out more about his musical journey so far, his debut single “Trendsetter” and what he’s got lined up for the future. Check out our interview with MHY below.
