Jean-Loup Pinson is a French-British composer, based in London whose name is synonymous with musical versatility and innovation. Over his decorated career, he’s applied his talents across diverse mediums, from films and television to theatre, video games and contemporary dance. His extensive credits include the Ophir Award-nominated The Art of Waiting, the Berlinale-selected documentary Speer Goes to Hollywood and the critically lauded dance production Comrades in the Dark.
As part of award-winning composer Frank Ilfmanâs team, Jean-Loup has contributed to major film scores, including Gunpowder Milkshake and Ghost Stories. His formal training, culminating in a Bachelor of Music with first-class honours from the London College of Creative Media, has equipped him with a profound understanding of composition and performance. Recognised as a BAFTA Connect member since 2022, Jean-Loup continues to redefine how music can intersect with other art forms.
His latest release comes with the new EP titled A Moment of Deathlessness, marking another daring step in his creative journey. By blending the poetry of Emily Dickinson with modern music styles, Jean-Loup bridges centuries of artistic expression. The EP draws inspiration from Emily Dickinsonâs reflections on existence, mortality and desire, delivering them through a striking mix of choral arrangements, electronic beats and spoken word performances.
The Carice Singers, one of the UKâs most celebrated chamber choirs, lend their ethereal voices to the verses and their classical interpretations are juxtaposed with the energy of London-based hip hop artists and poets Armanious and Tanaka Fuego, who contribute original spoken-word pieces inspired by the themes of the poetry. This interplay between the traditional and the cutting edge blurs the lines between genres and reframes timeless artistic endeavour in a new and exciting way.
Tracks on A Moment of Deathlessness showcase Jean-Loup Pinsonâs talent in crafting complex, emotionally impactful compositions. From the haunting elegance of the choral arrangements to the rhythmic pulse of electronic beats and the gritty honesty of spoken-word performances, each piece invites listeners into an immersive, thought-provoking experience. âEmily Dickinsonâs poetry speaks to universal themes of existence. I wanted to explore those ideas from contrasting angles. The collaboration between a classical choir and contemporary hip-hop artists seemed like a compelling way to examine the enduring relevance of her work,â he explains.
This EP also reinforces Jean-Loup’s ability to innovate across disciplines. His work in film, television and dance has demonstrated his knack for storytelling through music and with A Moment of Deathlessness, he continues this tradition by translating Emily Dickinsonâs poetic works into a multidimensional musical journey, one that’s engaging, groundbreaking and thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.
