Coming out of Denmark’s music scene, KALEIIDO is a duo built on the innovative pairing of guitarist Anna Roemer and saxophonist Cecilie Strange. Since forming in 2019, the pair have been on a mission to craft music that cuts across genre borders, blending the fluidity of jazz with the textures of ambient and electronic soundscapes. Their musical output presents a kaleidoscopic journey that leaves listeners immersed in a world of sonic exploration.
With original styles and contrasting backgrounds, Anna Roemer brings her pop and indie experience to the table from collaborations with artists like Asger Techau and IDA KUDO while Cecilie Strange’s roots in jazz traditions and her flourishing solo career add an improvisational quality to the project. Their ethos of constant reinvention is further amplified by their practice of inviting new collaborators for each performance and recording, making every iteration of KALEIIDO’s music new and entirely unique.
Performing at leading events like the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and Vinterjazz, KALEIIDO has become a cherished act in Denmark’s music scene. Their catalogue of studio work includes three full-length albums, a double release with Yellow Spoon and multiple singles, as well as a live recording at Brorson’s Church during the 2021 Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Yet, for all their collaborative ventures, the duo’s latest work marks a return to their artistic core.
At the close of last year, KALEIIDO announced a stripped-back approach that would spotlight the interplay between Anna’s guitar and Cecilie’s sax. This new chapter began with a celebrated performance at the Danish Music Awards Jazz in Store Vega, followed by an intimate series of duo concerts across Denmark. Now they’ve captured this latest endeavour in their latest project, the brand new three-track EP titled PART OF NATURE.
Recorded in May, the EP was born from a series of live sessions captured in the outdoor pavilion of Karens Minde Kulturhus in Sydhavnen. The serene wooden structure, the distant rumble of thunder and the gentle patter of rain wraps their music in a warm, organic aesthetic, creating an enveloping listening experience from start to finish.
Opened by the aptly titled “SWEET THUNDER,” the shake of distant thunder gives way to the deep tone of sax, slowly taking shape over a series of sustained notes before the delicate arrangement gently tumbles into place with airy guitar notes. With the two musicians engaged in an elegant balletic dance, they cast an enchanting scene that gradually progresses with smooth layers and sweeps of ebow guitar lines to deliver a deeply mesmeric soundscape.
“DEVINE SUNSHINE” follows with the soft swells of vibrating guitar texture before the bright timbre of sax enters to glide above. Flowing with shimmering guitar notes and blissful melodic leads, it’s an elegant slice of dreamy instrumental music that allows the listener to get completely lost in a sea of dazzling melodic dashes and fluttering elements.
Closing the EP with “LAND OF RAIN,” the hushed sounds of plucked guitar notes and whispered sax lines rise and fall to craft a beautiful combination of subtle twangs and graceful buzz, resulting in a soporific listening experience. Floating through an atmospheric musical landscape where free-flowing performance meets loose melodic construction, it’s a truly stunning finale to conclude this highly original and thoroughly enjoyable work of ambient instrumental music.
