Toronto-based band Derev have become a thrilling act in the progressive rock scene by stitching their powerful sound with the intricate threads of traditional Middle Eastern music. Born out of the trials of displacement and the sheer determination of its members, Derev’s story is just as compelling as their musical output.
Drummer Michel Karakach, who fled war in the Middle East to seek refuge in Canada, reunited with childhood friend and guitarist Armando Bablanian to bring their shared musical dream to life. Joined by bassist Stan Komarovsky, keyboardist Ran Zehavi and frontman Mike Symons, Derev has forged a group that brings together a diverse array of influences to form a truly unique musical identity.
Derev first introduced their sound to the world in 2021 with their debut single “Futile,” quickly followed by “Delayed” and their first full-length album, Leap of Faith. Their music, steeped in progressive complexity and echoes of Middle Eastern tinges has won over listeners around the world.
Now, as they prepare to release their upcoming sophomore album, Troubled Mind, Derev is offering fans a window into what’s to come with the second single from the album, “Cyclone.” This track distils the experience of imposter syndrome, an all-too-common mental state that fosters self-doubt and feelings of unworthiness. “Cyclone” presents a profound portrayal of these inner struggles, framing negative thoughts as a relentless antagonist that chases and torments the protagonist. The cyclone, a symbol of chaotic mental anguish, mirrors the whirlwind of self-criticism and insecurity that often accompanies imposter syndrome.
Brought in by soft bass tones and shimmering cymbal, intricate guitar plucks enter above the laid back snap of the beat to form gentle backing for Mike’s rich vocal leads to glide above. Casting poignant lyricism via impassioned delivery, the song flows through a mesmeric rock scene brimming with emotion and moving aesthetic. Cut with airy backing vocals as the lead melodies drift above the building energy, the instrumentation swells to craft an anthemic soundscape.
With slick instrumental flourishes, the finale serves up a burst of alternative rock intensity, leaving a lasting impression of this spectacular new single from Derev. With their highly anticipated second record set to drop in March, 2025 is shaping up to be another exciting year for this talented outfit and they’re sure to continue going from strength to strength with each move they make.
