Formed by over thirty musicians from fifteen countries and all seven continents, including contributors from research stations in Antarctica, this collective offers a groundbreaking artistic endeavour that’s resulted in a prolific creative output.
Harnessing the power of technology, INTERCONTINEN7AL proves that creativity can thrive remotely, offering an example of unity in an often-divided world. Since making their entrance in 2020 with the self-titled debut album Intercontinen7al, the group has become known for their constantly shifting sound that cuts across various genres and influences.
Over the last few years, they’ve delivered an impressive catalogue of work across multiple full-length records. Their work features a blend of rock, pop, blues, jazz, Latin, funk, metal, classical, reggae and folk and through their ongoing work, they’ve built a global fan base drawn to their innovative approach to music-making.
Their latest release, the five-track EP titled World Over, distils everything that makes INTERCONTINEN7AL extraordinary. A melting pot of sounds and styles, the EP offers a diverse listening experience while paying tribute to a wide range of influences, including Pearl Jam, Prince, Tool, Porcupine Tree and The Beatles.
Started off with the silky Latin-inflected guitar tones on opening track “Puerto Aisen,” smooth female vocal leads drift above the gentle patter of percussion and mesmeric acoustic guitar layers, crafting a hypnotic soundscape. With dashes of sultry sax lines and wrapped in a hazy sonic atmosphere, delicate melodies float through the arrangement to deliver a truly enchanting scene that showcases the group’s memorable songwriting and performance panache.
“Night Shift” starts with dreamlike plucks and airy textures before the bright strums of guitar and steady beat of drums ushers in a graceful vocal duet, capturing an Americana tinged sound. Building with developing instrumentation and rising energy, it’s an epic eight minute voyage brimming with stunning musicianship and cinematic quality.
On “Butterflies,” the band serves up an elegant piano focused intro which gently glides into a mellow jazz style pop piece. With the lilting rhythmic sway and intricate interplay of acoustic guitar licks, soft bass notes and woodwind flourishes above tapped percussion, It’s a truly charming bop that frames their sound in a breezy, delightful setting.
The dusty twangs of guitar on “The Chamber” sets up a smokey prog style rock instrumental full of moody aesthetic and incredible lead guitar work. Closing the EP with a remastered version of “Manor Hill,” the melancholic tones of acoustic guitar plucks is met with hushed strings and rattling drums before the commanding female vocal presence lifts the composition with dazzling melodic leads to offer a spectacular finale to the band’s sensational new EP.
