Hailing from Toronto, NYRE is an alternative pop artist who channels themes of love, struggle and empowerment into dark yet infectious songs. Inspired by artists like Halsey, Billie Eilish and Tate McRae and infusing her work with tinges of K-pop aesthetic, NYRE brings something entirely new and truly exciting to the music scene.
Since her debut single, “Decisions,” landed in 2019, NYRE has been on a thrilling musical journey. Releasing multiple singles, remixes and collaborations with artists such as Aarynn Rose, OHnotez, Cryxis, Thorb, Jack Craven, Arturo Grao, Alleko and Nawy along the way, she’s earned a loyal fanbase and clocked over a million spins of her music online.
Now, NYRE unveils her highly anticipated debut EP titled Avoidant, a four-track exploration of heartbreak, strength and identity. The project opens with “It Should Be You,” an alternative pop outing that turns the anguish of lost love into a danceable, emotionally-charged experience. Co-written and produced by Jonathan Karkar, the track combines bouncy vocal leads, shimmering synths, soft percussion and picture painting lyrics of heartbreak and longing, which all folds into an addictively catchy jam.
The EP’s lead single, “Joke’s On Me,” which glances at the bittersweet realisation of love’s fragility and the balance between trust and betrayal, casts a spellbinding sound of elegant piano arrangement and dazzling vocal performance. Framing her memorable songwriting in a delicate, ethereal setting, it’s a stunning slice of dream pop full of silky melodic writing and graceful instrumentation.
“You Didn’t Mean It” explores the hollow words of insincere love and the empowerment that comes from moving beyond them captured in a moody, atmospheric pop sound led by NYRE’s captivating vocals and sharp lyricism and driven by rattling, trap style beats. The pulsating bass and snapping hi-hats provide a slick backdrop for her voice, which glides over the enveloping arrangement, delivering a cathartic and powerful listening experience throughout.
Final track “Main Character” starts with the immersive textures of sweeping synths as NYRE’s brooding vocals hover above. With the laid back patter of drums adding a steady rhythmic energy, the track crafts a dark, mesmerising sound to perfectly conclude NYRE’s sensational debut EP.
Providing an incredible run through of the latest chapter in her musical story, with Avoidant, NYRE presents an engrossing sound that’s equally original and compelling. Set to bring her music alive on stage, fans can experience NYRE’s magnetic live performance on January 23rd at Rivoli in Toronto.
