Hailing from Bournemouth on the south coast of the UK, Baz Edmondson is a singer-songwriter crafting an emotive sound that blends together indie folk and pop rock elements. His music carries echoes of both modern alternative folk artists like Damien Rice and Ben Howard and the classic storytelling of songwriters like James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
His songs are rich with poetic lyricism, telling stories that feel at once personal and relatable while his intricate guitar work and delicate vocals bring his music to life in truly charming fashion. In August 2023, he unveiled his original sonic vision with his debut single “Shipwright’s Dandelion” and has since shared a string of well-received songs while winning over fans around the world and securing extensive radio support.
Now he brings us his latest release with his debut EP titled From the Father Tree featuring his four previously released alongside the brand new single “Fair Winds & Calm Seas.” Thematically, From the Father Tree is a reflection on life, love and loss, weighty subjects that Baz explores with sensitivity and purpose. Throughout the record, he distils the fear and pain of losing loved ones, the risk involved in loving deeply and the moments of joy that give life meaning into heartfelt artistic expression. While the EP acknowledges the grief that inevitably comes with human connection, it also celebrates the magic of birth, the spark of new love and the sense of purpose that keeps us moving forward.
Starting off with “Ladybird Red,” Baz’s soft vocals enter with gentle piano plinks, forming a dreamy, stripped-back sound that gradually blossoms with lush string textures. Full of blissful melodic writing, the arrangement swells with subtle energy as staccato string lines and stretched vocal leads engage in a balletic dance to cast an enchanting folk pop soundscape. With “The Shepherd’s Lullaby,” intricate guitar plucks and piano notes are met by alluring vocals spinning graceful melodic leads carrying poignant lyricism. Building with the hushed patter of percussive elements and warm tones of string layers, the song presents a mesmeric slice of stunning indie folk music that’s truly impossible not to love.
Next up, his debut single “Shipwright’s Dandelion” arrives with airy bird chips, the whisper of reversed textures and atmospheric instrumental tones as the ornate flutter of piano stitches beautiful melodic threads into the dreamy musical fabric. Floating with the echo of pulsing kick, adding a sparse rhythmic anchor, exquisite strings add to the piece, resulting in a delightful instrumental composition. The brand new song “Fair Winds & Calm Seas” pairs acoustic guitar strums and the organic aesthetic of piano and string before giving way to Baz’s silky vocals. Building the energy with the steady shuffle of drums, softly twanging guitar notes and soothing piano combine beneath the storytelling lyrics, reaching an epic rock-tinged crescendo before concluding with the final chorus.
Closing the EP with “Wills Fallow,” the bright bounce of plucked acoustic guitar and smooth vocals deliver a playful indie folk jam that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Offering one last dose of Baz Edmondson’s enamouring folk sound, it’s a superb finale to his sensational debut EP, a release that’s enjoyable, engaging and original from start to finish.
