Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and composer Filip Dahl has built a career defined by continual artistic exploration and virtuoso musicianship. From his early days as a guitarist in Norway’s rock scene in the 70s to his work as a producer and solo artist, his impact on the music world has been both profound and far-reaching. His journey took him through the founding of Brygga Studio in Trondheim, a creative hub throughout the 80s and 90s, where he helped shape the sound of Norwegian music.
Despite his success, Filip stepped away from the industry at the turn of the millennium, taking time to reconnect with music on a personal level. His return in 2016 as a solo artist marked a new chapter, one that would see him consistently releasing music that showcases his passion and unique artistic vision.
In 2023, Filip took yet another step forward by forming Transcending Into the Unknown, a four-piece band that blends diverse influences into a strikingly original sound. The project began as a collaboration between Filip, his son Stian Dahl and his brother Robert “pzyroks” Dahl, each bringing their own sonic flair, musical backgrounds and guitar styles to the project. Despite never having played together before, the trio discovered an instant chemistry, crafting a sound that merges blues, heavy metal and melodic prog rock into something entirely new.
The band’s eponymous debut single, “Transcending Into the Unknown,” arrived in April 2023, earning critical acclaim and marking the arrival of the new band in spectacular fashion. Recognising the potential to take their music even further, the band welcomed vocalist Eva Halsetrønning Rambraut in September last year 2024 with her crystal-clear voice introducing a stunning contrast to Robert’s growling and Filip’s more traditional vocal delivery. With this lineup solidified, Transcending Into the Unknown was ready to embark on its next chapter as an exciting quartet.
Now, they unveil their debut record titled The Journey, a six-track release that fully embodies their genre-breaking approach. The record serves as a statement of artistic intent, a fusion of their collective influences and a showcase of their willingness to explore new musical sphere from moments of relaxed blues-infused guitar work to the crushing weight of heavy metal riffs and the intricate storytelling of progressive rock.
Opened by the misty acoustic guitar plucks on “Winternight,” a mesmeric soundscape gently builds with softly pattering percussion and piano chords before the intense yet subdued vocals enter to cast a harsh contrast before Eva’s angelic voice spins elegant melodies. Erupting with charing drums and lively guitar lines, the track shifts gears to serve up an anthemic prog rock sound brimming with slick lead guitar work and driving energy.
“Giants” follows with the roll of drums and intricate marching guitar riff met with airy lead notes, gradually rising before the expressive vocals thread gripping melodies into the rousing musical fabric. With “The Valley,” the pulse of bass guitar, gentle guitar chords and mellow drums set up bright lead notes which delicately tumble above before the growled vocals glide in. Flowing with moments of graceful vocal hooks and shifting instrumental passages, it’s another epic jam of cinematic quality and immersive aesthetic.
Other highlights on the release include the remastered version of their debut self-titled single “Transcending Into the Unknown,” a dazzling instrumental rock piece that presents a wholly absorbing listening experience. Full of lilting rhythmic sway and the rise and fall of sonic energy, capped by Filip’s incredible lead guitar performance, it’s a sensational finale to the band’s stellar debut record.
