Holden. is the artistic banner of identical twins Joe and Alex Holden, a producer duo whose infectious sound has struck a chord with fans around the world. Previously earning critical acclaim from the likes of Kerrang! and Dead Press for their earlier work, the pair have continued going from strength to strength in the alternative pop scene with a relentless work ethic and an instinct for crafting emotionally-charged indie anthems.
Their journey has previously seen them tour with Bombay Bicycle Club, Tom Misch, Rachel Chinouriri, Hot Milk and more as hired guns, playing stages worldwide while simultaneously building their own sonic identity. In 2023, they introduced listeners to their studio sound with the debut single “Depths Alone,” marking the beginning of a rapidly expanding catalogue. Despite their demanding touring schedule, Holden. has consistently delivered new music, recording and producing their tracks in hotel rooms, tour buses, dining room tables and attic spaces, resulting in multiple singles, several EPs and live recordings.
Now they bring us their latest release with their brand new EP titled Happier Without Me, a release that thematically revolves around the emotional whirlwind of post-breakup life. Once again produced while on the road with the brothers playing all the instruments themselves, the release serves up eight tracks of their catchy rock-tinged indie pop sound.
Kicked off with title track “Happier Without Me,” the bright flutter of airy synth tones and shuffling drums sets up a buoyant jam capped by rich vocal leads spinning catchy hooks and storytelling lyricism. With rattling percussive shots and colourful arrangement, the track flows through infectious choruses driven by energising rhythms, resulting in a stunning slice of vibrant indie pop.
“Humbled” shifts the vibes with a subtly melancholic sound of emotive vocals, warm key tones and snapping beats, gliding through the bounce of jumpy energy in the chorus. Serving up more of their instantly memorable songwriting and charming DIY sound, it’s another superb showcase of Holden.’s originality and wide appeal.
With “How To Be A Real Person,” soft acoustic guitar notes are met with rolling drums and gentle vocal performance, casting a mesmeric and invigorating pop scene that builds with lively energy. With slick ebb and flow between the reflective verses and shimmering choruses, it’s an engaging outing that perfectly balances an intimate aesthetic with cinematic flair.
Other highlights on the EP include songs like “It Must Be A Sign” with its uptempo energy of clapped rhythms, grooving bass lines and spirited delivery of expressive vocals laying down addictive melodic lines throughout. Closing the release, their debut single “Depths Alone” brings a danceable indie vibes with punchy drums and colourful synth textures, floating through a stripped-back, dreamy arrangement in the verse before launching an epic chorus of intoxicating rhythm and melodic writing, resulting in a superb finale to the duo’s sensational new EP.
