Based in the Estonian capital of Tallinn, Arashk Azizi is an Iranian composer, pianist and producer whose work reaches to the past from the present and brings together mythology, literature and personal experiences into stunning musical creations. Over the years, Arashk has earned a reputation for crafting compositions that go beyond classical traditions and discipline, blending late romanticism, neo-classical and modern influences into a uniquely expressive sound.
He employs an original ‘Piano Poem’ style, where the piano emulates the emotional weight of a full orchestra, showcases his ability to create profound, cinematic soundscapes via minimal arrangements. Taking cues from Gustav Mahler, Igor Stravinsky, Franz Liszt and John Adams, His music carries both the grandeur of symphonic storytelling and the intimate intensity of solo piano works. His creative endeavours also see him work as an author, a film composer and a producer at Tunitemusic, where he collaborates with artists worldwide to help bring their musical visions to life.
With a background in cinema and an affinity for story-driven sound, Arashk has scored feature films, short films, TV series and theatrical productions, using his talents to translate tales into music. Having delivered an incredible catalogue of studio releases, he now brings us his latest release with his brand new four-track EP titled Elegy Sonata, a work that distils themes of death, grief and the meaning of life across piano-focused compositions, released via the Tunitemusic imprint.
The work was inspired by the passing of his father, a moment that sparked an extended creative process, shaping emotional impact into a powerful artistic statement. Ultimately, Elegy Sonata is a meditation on the inevitability of death and its defining role in shaping life; challenging the listener to confront the fragility of existence while finding beauty and meaning in impermanence.
Opened by the hushed notes of “Epilogue,” a sombre tone of subtly melancholic melodies drift above the gentle lilting sway, casting a pensive listening experience. “Lament” follows with moody bass notes and whispers of intensity, veiled in a stripped back aesthetic of steady rhythmic notes. Flowing with the bright plink of lead notes, gliding above the anchored bass, the piece flows with brooding feel and builds with hints of hurried energy, allowing deep thought to be conjured by both Arashk and the spaces in between the struck keys.
With “Remnant,” a deft balance of playful, balletic lead notes and a dark tension combine to forge a quietly off-kilter and calmly dissonant piece. Elegant flutter of lead notes tumble above the grounding presence of bass tones to present a piece that’s at once minimal yet striking throughout.
The lively bounce of bass notes on closing composition “Tempest” are met with erratic staccato stabs before sweeps of layered sustained tones to create an absorbing sound full of intricate ebb and flow. Building with graceful runs, the song shifts with delicate performance, progressing with airy notes that flicker between smooth melodic flourishes and urgent animation, resulting in a spectacular piece brimming with twists and turns to provide a superb finale to Arashk Azizi’s sensational new EP.
