Patricio Franzi is a composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist whose work is defined by an advanced harmonic language and an unyielding dedication to artistic integrity. As a musician, he moves between piano, guitars, bandoneón, bass, keyboards and vocals, creating compositions that bridge the worlds of classical and popular music. His artistic philosophy is best showcased in “Creative Musical Thinking,” a space dedicated to expanding traditional and contemporary musical forms while upholding artistic tradition.
Capturing his sound in the studio, he released his debut single “Breve Historia de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires” in 2017 and has since delivered an impressive catalogue of work over the years. Now he brings us his latest release with his new EP titled Senderus Memorius, a bold and innovative EP that reframes the string quartet format.
Performed by musicians from the Argentine Symphony Orchestra, the piece blends the tradition of European chamber music with the rhythmic and harmonic elements of Latin American popular music and rock. The result is a striking collision of academic and artistic popular music, going beyond conventional string writing to offer something entirely new.
The four-track EP opens with “Senderus Memorius 1,” playful plucks are met with lively lead string flourishes, crafting a jumpy soundscape that tumbles into place with delicate melodic flutters and dancing staccato notes. Presented in a brisk ninety second dose of forward-thinking, modern classical composition, it’s the perfect piece to set the scene of the release.
The subtly melancholic stretched notes of “Senderus Memorius 2” follows with layers of strings forming a lilting rhythmic sway before the moody bass tones and pizzicato flickers craft a brooding sound. Flowing with moments of delicate melodic writing and the tip-toeing prance of bright string dashes, it’s another superb display of Patricio’s ability to reimagine traditional musical disciplines in a thoroughly novel way.
“Senderus Memorius 3” starts with intricately pulsing notes before blossoming with spirited layers of competing string lines where animated performances of sensational musicianship offers a mesmeric listening experience throughout. It’s an incredible showcase of Patricio Franzi innovative compositional mind and knack for bringing to life his artistic vision in engaging and exciting ways. Closing the EP with the title piece “Senderus Memorius,” all three original composition are tied together in an expansive seven-and-a-half minute outing to present the Senderus Memorius experience in a cohesive and seamless fashion. From start to finish, on his new EP, Patricio Franzi offers a worthwhile and enjoyable exploration of instrumental neo-classical music that’s sure to win over both casual listeners and talented musicians alike.
