Portland’s Creature Party is a band that lives up to its name; unleashing a magnetic mix of post punk, new wave and synth-infused rock, all wrapped in a playful, high-octane package. A DIY outfit with an instinct for good times, they balance a upbeat, tongue-in-cheek songwriting with tight musicianship and infectious hooks. Their sound is equal parts nostalgia and exciting new energy, recalling the punchy attitude of early punk while embracing the glimmering textures of synth-driven rock.
The band first emerged in 2018 with their debut album, Best Regards, introducing listeners to their unique sonic world built on memorable melodies, punk spirit and a willingness to lean into the fun side of rock. They continued to develop and expand their sound, releasing a string of well-received singles before delivering their sophomore album, Thoughts on File, in 2023.
Now, they return with The Meaning of Being, a brand new six-track EP that serves as both a philosophical nod and an invitation to the dance floor. The record tackles existential questions with a wink, delivering sharp, hook-filled tracks that make you want to bop along while contemplating life’s big mysteries. Produced by Evan Mersky at Red Lantern Studios and mixed and mastered by Matt Thomson, The Meaning of Being offers the perfect snapshot of the latest chapter in Creature Party’s thrilling musical story.
Kicked off by the curiously titled “Playboy Mansion Monkey Bite,” the flutter of animal samples sets a transportive atmosphere before the crunch of guitar and strike of drums ushers in a riff-driven rock sound capped by expressive vocal leads. Propelled by brisk drums and pulsing bass, it’s a catchy and energising rock outing tinged with slick synth touches and brimming with lighthearted storytelling lyricism.
“Tell Me” follows with the swell of feedback and rattle of filtered drums before building to a charging synth rock scene where punching rhythms and a wall of gripping instrumentation is met by invigorating vocal performance that rings out above. Flowing with bright and instantly memorable melodic hooks, it’s a raucous outing that deftly balances fierce rock energy with punk attitude and pop-inflected appeal to serve up an epic listening experience from start to finish.
Other highlights on the EP include tracks like “Act Up” with its bass-focused arrangement which glides with vibrant synth flickers, tapped percussion and rising guitar backing. Led by compelling vocals that bend between blissful melodic lines and belted delivery, the track presents the perfect showcase of the band’s highly original and quirky fusion of genres cut with their superb songwriting panache.
Closing the EP with “Quicksand,” sweeping textures give way to a moody synth rock soundscape where bouncy rhythms, muted guitar lines and brooding synth tones collide with intense vocal leads to craft a dark and lofty sound to offer a stellar finale to the band’s sensational new EP. With a live show lined up a Portland’s World Famous Kenton Club on the 5th April, Creature Party are set to bring their new material alive on stage to celebrate the release of The Meaning of Being.
