Coming out of the Dallas alternative rock scene, Awaiting Abigail is a band driven by seasoned musicianship and explosive, guitar-driven energy. Though the group officially came together just last year, its foundation is built on years of artistic connection and experience. At the heart of the band is Abigail Hill, a young vocalist and theatre arts student whose pure vocal power provided the missing piece for the outfit.
Her arrival not only finalised the lineup but also inspired the band’s name, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Awaiting Abigail’s lineup is a fusion of old and new, bringing together longtime collaborators alongside fresh creative energy. Three of its members first played together in the late 90s as part of the band Lost Reality and their rekindled chemistry forms the backbone of this new project. Adding a unique familial touch, father-daughter duo Mike and Kori Tolfa contribute their shared musical bond while final link came when James recognised Abigail Hill’s striking vocal ability and after unanimous agreement, she became the definitive voice of Awaiting Abigail.
Wasting no time in making their presence felt, the band introduced their sound at the end of last year with their debut EP Bad Mind. Across its four tracks, they delivered a fierce and emotionally charged take on alternative rock, winning over listeners with a style that balances originality with an accessible, anthemic edge.
Now, they bring us another taste of their thrilling sound with their single titled “I Hate You,” a track that delivers a powerful punch of their impactful rock output. Thematically, the song captures the frustrations of dealing with toxic gossip and petty drama, whether in school, the workplace or beyond. The song doesn’t hold back in its lyrical delivery, offering an unfiltered response to the kind of behind-the-back whispers and backstabbing that so many encounter.
Set up by the ring of a school bell, a bass guitar grooves over the strike of the drums as samples of gossiping chatter adds to the song’s context. As Abigail’s fiery voice enters, the crunch of gritty guitar riffs injects a raucous dose of alternative rock energy, while the halftime switch up underpins the bold chorus, accenting the stomping rhythm of the vocal hook.
Peppered with wild wah-drenched guitar leads and a scorching outro solo, “I Hate You” sees Awaiting Abigail serve up an angsty alternative anthem packed full of attitude and memorable songwriting. It’s another incredible showcase of this band’s fierce and original sound, brought to life by their stellar musicianship and the unforgettable voice of Abigail.
