Hailing from the UK south coast town of Bournemouth, NOCOLOUR is an exciting name in the Afro house and Afro tech scene, but the duo behind the project have been forging their sound for over a decade. German producer Marcus Voss and Cuban-born Will Hernandez first connected through a shared passion for rhythm, texture and global musical expression.
The story of NOCOLOUR is one of fusion, both sonically and culturally; Marcus comes from a background steeped in techno, tech house and drum & bass, bringing a clinical precision to the studio. Will, on the other hand, finds his musical DNA in salsa, Latin rhythms and organic house, contributing warmth, groove and a human pulse. Together, they deliver a sound that sits somewhere between the club and the ritual, a hybrid of deep grooves, stripped-down arrangements and spiritual energy.
Their debut EP NUMBERS, released via the Black Waxx imprint, presents a fully-formed artistic statement that fuses years of experience into four tracks of emotive, percussive-driven electronica. Recorded entirely in Marcus’s home studio, NUMBERS captures that elusive energy of real-time discovery. “We just locked in,” Marcus explains. “Each track felt stronger than the last—and when we made Number Four, we knew it was something special.” That spontaneity shines throughout the EP, resulting in music that feels lived-in yet invigorating, organic yet cutting edge.
Jumping into a spacey groove on opening track “Number One,” smokey vocal samples and a hypnotic synth pulse is driven by the steady push of the beat, crafting an immersive and mesmeric soundscape. Casting a trance-inducing vibe cut with soulful vocal flutters and wrapped up in enveloping sound design, it’s a superb showcase of the act’s club-ready sound that’s at once gripping and intricate.
“Number Two” offers a more atmospheric sound where the delicate patter of percussion and loops of bubbling synth elements combine to create an engaging sound that gently rises and falls. Tinged with the groove of tribal rhythms and misty echoes of processed vocal leads, it’s a beat-focused jam that’s soothing and danceable in equal measure. With “Number Three,” they lay down a stunning display of genre-blending music, captured in a stripped back arrangement of muted beats, rattling percussive rolls and engrossing vocalisations that dance wildly above the minimal backdrop which gradually develops with warm piano chords.
Closing the EP with “Number Four,” hazy vocal textures ebb and flow against a rolling Afro tech beat, giving it the kind of motion and energy that draws dancers inward before sending them spiralling outward. It’s a track that’s already garnered early support from BBC Radio Solent and is likely to become a calling card for the duo as they continue to share more of their sensational sound of innovative dance music.
Even without live shows on the horizon, there’s already a growing buzz around what’s to come. With new tracks in the pipeline and early radio backing already rolling in, NOCOLOUR are clearly just getting started. Commenting on the new endeavour, they shares, “We’d love anyone who connects with the music to come along for the ride. This project is built on passion, and in return, we’ll keep creating and sharing our energy with anyone who wants to listen. This music is for the people-and we hope you enjoy it as much as we love making it.”
