Swiss singer-songwriter Andrea Schmider has long been a beloved figure in the world of reflective folk pop, drawing from a lifetime of melody, emotion and spirituality. Born in 1971 near the gateway to the Bernese Oberland, her relationship with music began before she could even walk. Her early infatuation with artists like Whitney Houston and Sandy Patti would eventually blossom into her own expressive vocal style, marked by warmth and an emotional range that’s defined her career across decades.
After years in choirs and behind-the-scenes work as a background vocalist, Andrea stepped into the spotlight with a solo acoustic programme in 2010. Her debut EP Beauty from Ashes followed in 2012, setting up the full-length Promise of Spring in 2016, both releases rich in lyrical honesty and soulful delivery. More recently, 2023’s Movin’ On marked a return to studio recording following time devoted to education, including a MAS in Pop/Rock from the Berne University of Arts.
Now, with her new EP titled Potpourri, Andrea Schmider delivers one of her most nuanced works to date. Produced by the acclaimed Manuel Halter, who’s known for his collaborations with artists like Luca Hänni and Tracey Campbell, the five-track release feels both intimate and timeless, bringing together delicate folk instrumentation, orchestral flourishes and poetic storytelling. The result is a sound that lands somewhere between Lana Del Rey’s cinematic melancholy and the tender reflection of Brooke Fraser, with hints of Nina June’s art pop elegance.
True to its name, Potpourri is a carefully curated blend of sonic and emotional textures. Each track carries its own emotional weight, yet the EP flows as a cohesive whole held together by Andrea’s alluring voice and a sense of spiritual pondering that invites listeners inward. “Set the Sails” opens the project with a quiet swell, using nautical metaphor to explore moments when life demands courage and movement. It’s a song about making peace with change, its gentle rhythms underscoring the energy of forward motion.
On “Fractured Beauty,” inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi, Andrea leans into vulnerability with grace, honouring brokenness as a source of beauty and strength. It’s a charming moment that epitomises the EP’s thematic core; healing, transformation and emotional integrity. Elsewhere, “Lonely Streets” distils the quiet ache of displacement, pairing melancholic melodies with lyrical glimmers of hope. In “Going in Circles,” she channels frustration and childlike wonder simultaneously, playing with repetition and uncertainty without losing sight of the emotional throughline.
The EP closes with “Sweet Stillness,” a soft yet profound meditation on solitude. Here, her vocals are at their most intimate, inviting the listener to find peace in quietness, a fitting conclusion to a record based in thoughtful musing and renewal. With Potpourri, Andrea Schmider has created a musical refuge forged by experience, faith and a lifelong mission to using music as a vessel for honesty.
