Coming out of Melbourne’s underground music scene, ReeToxA is the compelling creative moniker of Jason McKee, a songwriter whose musical journey has been decades in the marking. With a background planted firmly in the alternative rock soil of the ’90s, he first found his voice in 1995, inspired by the impact of bands like Nirvana. What followed was a personal pursuit of songcraft shaped by quiet persistence, chance encounters with legends like Jeff Buckley and an unshakable need to make something meaningful.
Now, after 30 years of writing behind the scenes, Jason McKee has stepped into the light with ReeToxA, finally ready to share a sound that’s been years in the making. His debut single “Bobbie” landed with immediate emotional weight, quickly paving the way for his full-length album Pines Salad, a record that serves as both a sonic exorcism and a heartfelt declaration of intent.
Pines Salad was produced by Australian studio legend Simon Moro and features a lineup of seasoned players including Kit Riley on bass, James Ryan on guitar and Peter Marin behind the kit. The result is a turbulent and wildly original body of work, bouncing between the fuzzy crunch of the Pixies and the punch of the White Stripes, while never losing the emotional intimacy of confessional songwriting.

It’s this constant interplay between volume and vulnerability, between power and pain that gives ReeToxA its magnetism. Tracks on Pines Salad are brimming with lyrical dissection and sonic detours, refusing to play by the rules of any single genre. Jason isn’t afraid to lean into his past and much of the record is autobiographical in nature.
From the chugging opening rocker “Alcohol” with its steady rhythmic groove, crunching guitars and commanding vocal leads to the moody indie-inflected outing “Amber” and the breezy jam on “Avocet Court,” the album delivers incredible range, stitched with the thread of ReeToxA’s alluring vocal performance. “Bobbie,” the lead single, is drenched in grief, written in the wake of his mother’s death while he was serving a six-month sentence.
Elsewhere, songs like “Humbug” serves up an anthemic slice of emotive rock built on downtempo rhythms and soaring lead guitar licks, cut with ReeToxA’s smooth vocal leads. Closing the record with “Call,” he presents a delicate soundscape of dreamy guitar textures, softly pattering drums and moving vocals to offer a tender finale to his sensational debut full-length album.
