Berlin-based indie pop artist JILIAAN is fast becoming a voice for poignant songwriting in modern music. With a sound that originates from classical piano and a flair for cinematic arrangements, she crafts songs that flow between intimate and expansive aesthetics. Her artistic output lives in that rare space between deep meaning and engaging sound, where complex emotions are explored and an open invitation for connection is shared.
First arriving in 2022 with her debut single “Little Do You Know,” JILIAAN hinted at an artist with a knack for exposing emotional truths. Rather than building momentum, she then took a conscious step back, but that silence wasn’t absence, it was preparation. Returning earlier this year with a renewed creative spark and purpose, she’s been slowly and deliberately revealing a more refined version of herself through a series of new singles.
That slow reveal leads us now to L, her debut EP and easily her most incredible work to date. Across its piano-driven structure, L frames themes of trauma, isolation and self-reflection, delivered through a lens of self-deprecating humour and piercing candour. Recorded in her hometown of Hamburg, the project feels like a homecoming in every sense, grounding its sound in personal truth and brought to life by her virtuoso musicianship and dazzling voice.
With dashes of classical giants like Chopin influencing JILIAAN’s playing, her delicate yet emotionally potent writing shines throughout the release while she also pulls just as much from modern influences like Adele, Sam Smith and Jorja Smith, blending pop appeal with real weight. The string arrangements swell not for drama, but to mirror the emotional arc of each track and her vocals, always front and centre, carry a subtle power that’s soft, but never fragile.
Taking listeners into a dreamy scene with opening solo piano piece “Lullaby,” JILIAAN puts her composition flair and performance panache on full display with a truly beautiful instrumental outing of fluttering runs and softly bouncing rhythms. “Love Like a Movie” brings her classical pop sound into sharp focus with a stunning song of breathtaking grace. With her alluring voice carrying melancholic leads above an enveloping fabric of intricate piano notes and elegant string textures, it’s the perfect showcase of her engrossing musical vision.
Songs like “Lonely” refract her profound lyricism and aching vocals through a tender sphere of charming instrumental while “Loser” ventures further into her moving sound where heartfelt songwriting glides with instantly memorable melodic leads and a gentle rhythmic sway. Building with the mellow strike of drums, her impassioned voice soars to deliver a spectacular slice of timeless pop music. “Longing” brings a slick groove of snapping drums, rhythmic piano, pulsing bass and exquisite guitar licks, forming a smokey bluesy jam that captures JILIAAN’s sound in a completely different setting.
“Leave Me Be” takes things back to her cinematic pop offering with sweeping melodic threads, emphatic vocal layers and absorbing arrangement. Closing the EP with her debut single “Little Do You Know,” JILIAAN returns to her first chapter and brings her artistic journey full circle, delivering a superb finale with an epic rock-tinged pop track brimming with catchy songwriting and rising with a rousing key change. With L, JILIAAN presents an enthralling run through of her highly original and enduring sound and firmly plants herself on the map of must watch artists on the rise.
