Since landing on the music scene in August 2023, Melbourne-based queer pop artist POLLY has become known as a captivating new voice in alternative pop. With just a handful of tracks, she’s already made an impression in over 100 countries, offering listeners a unique sonic world where heartbreak and hope coexist on a shimmering dancefloor.
Making her entrance with the debut single “Sunday,” she’s gone from strength to strength with a string of well-received tracks that have seen her win over fans and earn critical acclaim along the way. Now she brings us her most ambitious release to date with her brand new EP titled Daddy Issues, making an exciting moment in her fast-rising musical adventure.
Across four intricately crafted tracks, she delivers a poignant and profoundly personal exploration of her past, wrapping complex emotional landscapes in warm, 80s-inspired production. Co-produced with Ben Oldland and Liam Quinn, it takes her glossy, digital aesthetic into even more absorbing and affecting areas. The opening track, “BETTER,” shimmers with autotuned longing and crisp beats, giving voice to that nagging sense of what could have been. It’s a perfect synthesis of POLLY’s sound; bittersweet yet danceable, emotionally compelling while dripping in synth pop appeal.
Recent single “B.I.T.E ME” follows with its punchy drums, immersive instrumentation and acidic hooks, serving up a post-breakup anthem designed to be screamed in the car at midnight. There’s attitude in abundance, with POLLY delivering every line with biting conviction, balancing pain and empowerment in equal measure.
The third track, “Colours,” slows the pace, offering a more reflective turn through a misty soundscape of delicate arrangement and silky vocal leads which drift above with alluring melodies carrying poignant lyricism. Built on soft piano, airy synths and ethereal vocal layering, it captures the ache of holding on to someone you know is no good for you with POLLY painting a portrait of yearning that feels at once relatable and personal.
Closing track “Feels Like” glides into a more meditative space, bringing the EP full circle. Pulsing with a melancholic club beat and hushed vocal deliveries, the song builds slowly, blooming into a chorus that’s both sonically expansive and emotionally intimate. With the soft textures of reverb-drenched tones, POLLY’s emotive voice hovers above to cast a dreamy scene as the gentle pulse of percussion carries the song into a euphoric dance-tinged electronic pop sphere.
Through her music, she’s revisiting wounds, wrapping them in reverb and rhythm and daring us to feel them with her. “I’ve poured everything into this EP. As an independent artist it takes so much time, energy and money to put a body of work together but it’s worth all of it… Writing these songs was like giving little me a big hug, telling her it’s going to be okay. It was cathartic and heartbreaking and releasing it is terrifying. I’m so excited to share this vulnerable piece of me with people and for them to take away from the songs whatever they need to right now,” she shares.
