Coming out of Leicester’s music scene, Mutomba has swiftly earned a reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling new artists on the rise. His sound leans into the softness of R&B and the emotional quality of neo soul, while always offering a sound that’s entirely his own. Mutomba’s music flows like a quiet conversation, it’s intimate, reflective and instinctively crafted.
It all began in 2023 with his debut single “Peace Of Mind Outro,” a track that introduced listeners to his unique sonic vision that’s soulful, vulnerable and brimming with feeling. Since then, he’s been building an increasingly impressive catalogue of work across multiple well-received singles and records.
Now he brings us his latest release with his brand new single titled “Cynical,” a song that was loosely inspired by the retro soul stylings of Durand Jones and Thee Sacred Souls, tapping into a warmer, more upbeat side of Mutomba’s songwriting. The story behind “Cynical” is as stripped-down and human as the song itself; penned and recorded late one night in his kitchen, Mutomba used nothing more than a pair of Apple earphones to capture the track and the lead vocal you hear was captured in the first take, laid down in just 30 minutes.
Taking a stunning snapshot of an artist in a burst of creativity, the song serves up a shimmering slice of soulful pop music brimming with catchy writing and slick grooves. Jumping straight in with the mellow shuffle of drums and pulse of bass, Mutomba’s smooth vocal leads drift in with sparse dashes of guitar and keys as he spins alluring melodic leads carrying heartfelt lyricism.
Flowing with the patter of percussion and overlapping layers of vocals, “Cynical” sees Mutomba lay down a truly timeless sound that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Wrapped in a dreamy sonic atmosphere and cut with subtly energising rhythms, the vintage textures of the instrumentation underpin his stellar vocal performance to deliver a charming and thoroughly enjoyable sound from start to finish.
It’s an incredible display of his engaging musical output, offering an exquisite musical moment that’s sure to stand the test of time. With live shows lined up on the horizon, Mutomba is sure to continue going from strength to strength as a talented artist with a captivating musical offering and there’s every reason to believe he’ll keep developing with the same sense of fluidity that’s brought him this far
