Based in Denver, Gavriel Micah is an instrumental artist building cinematic soundscapes revolving around his trumpet, pairing expressive melodies through arrangements that draw from Middle Eastern modes, Eastern European folk traditions and ambient textures. The result is a sound unlike any other, existing somewhere between folk ritual and modern instrumentalism which speaks as much to feeling as it does to listening.
The trumpet is the voice of his music, drifting through his compositions like a story passed through generations or humming with the stillness of a prayer. His sound is firmly based in mood and movement, creating music that carries memory, presence and ancestral context, celebrating the vitality, tension and beauty of a diasporic presence, offering an intimate and immersive listening experience.
Gavriel first introduced his original sound earlier this year with the debut single “The Fire Between Us,” followed by two more singles, each building on his trumpet-focused output and layered, cinematic aesthetic. Now he brings us his latest release with the brand new four-track EP titled Between The Letters, an outing that distills his vision into a profoundly personal body of work.
Between The Letters reflects a Jewish diasporic identity in conversation with the present rather than bound by exile. Across its four tracks, the EP blends atmospheric trumpet lines with piano, bass, guitar and percussion, creating an expressive fusion that shifts fluidly between meditative stillness and bursts of rhythmic energy. The music draws on Freygish and Phrygian Dominant modes, framing each piece in a sonic heritage while allowing for expansive, modern arrangements. This interplay of tradition and innovation gives the EP its distinctive emotional impact and a sound world where light and lineage meet in harmony.
Opened by the title track “Between The Letters,” the loop of bouncy piano lines and soft rhythmic march forms a transportive scene as airy instrumental textures and pulsing bass notes build the arrangement. As the smokey tones of his trumpet leads enter, he casts a mesmeric soundscape that flows with Eastern melodic flickers and absorbing aesthetic.
On “Saffron,” Gavriel links up with Nick Daniels to craft a grooving jam of lively rhythms where the patter of shuffling drums and bright piano flourishes creates a slick instrumental piece that slips into a hazy, psych-inflected vibe. As dancing guitar lines and Gavriel’s warm trumpet timbres take turns at the lead, they serve up a stellar outing that’s energising and memorable in equal measure.
“The Fire Between Us” jumps straight in with punching drums and misty key tones as Gavriel’s lead trumpet float above to lay down an engaging listening experience. Rhythmic and hypnotic, it’s a stunning display of his unique creativity and performance panache, offering an epic showcase of his fiercely original sound.
Closing the EP with “Layla ve’Or,” a moody atmosphere of drifting trumpet lines and deep bass notes combine to forge en enveloping sound. Progressing with a stripped back arrangement and ominous construction, it’s a superb finale that concludes Gavriel Micah’s sensational new EP in spectacular fashion.
