From the fringe of the Tunisian desert to Düsseldorf’s electronic scene, Taroug is an artist standing at the crossroads of sound, space and texture. The solo project of drummer and producer Tarek Zarroug, Taroug is built on both cultural heritage and sonic experimentation, bringing together percussive energy with global instrumentation, field recordings and immersive electronics.
With each release, he constructs immersive worlds that feel at once alien and subtly familiar, where organic elements collide with digital forms to create something truly transformative. Since making his mark with the 2020 EP Perpetual, as well as remixes for acts like Archive and Jules Ahoi, Taroug has forged a distinct language of rhythm and atmosphere. His collaborations with Denovali Records have further confirmed his status as a forward-thinking artist able to dismantle musical structures and reassemble them into multi-layered landscapes.
He glides across borders, basing his work instead in a developing exploration of identity, memory and environment. That vision fully crystallised in his well-received debut full-length record Darts & Kites, released last year via the Denovali imprint.
Following his album, he now brings us his latest release with his brand new track titled “Cicada,” presenting a sonic study in transformation, built on the principle that sound itself can embody the cycles of growth and decay. Cut with recordings taken in Thailand’s Khao Sok National Park, the piece filters natural atmosphere through a rhythmic lens where the droning call of cicadas is slowed and reshaped into a meditative pulse and percussive tones are derived from the brittle echoes of dead stalactites.
Set up with the enveloping swell of sweeping textures, the rattle of pattering shots float through the smokey soundscape to form a brooding aesthetic that expands with bright choral chants and slick groove. Peppered with cinematic synth tones and captured in a twisting arrangement packed full of surprises, it’s a spectacular display of Taroug’s creativity and sound design panache.
The project goes even further through a visual collaboration with architect and designer Marie Brosius; the accompanying piece for “Cicada” is a dense, flickering piece built from thousands of AI-generated images and abstract satellite textures. Drawing inspiration from the microscopic architecture of cicada wings and the patterned geometry of agricultural land, the video uses a hybrid of kinestasis-style animation and fluid interpolation to create a constantly shifting visual field, resulting in an engaging visual pairing for the track.
