Out of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, Tristan Turdean is a rising voice in emotionally charged indie pop, a self-produced multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter who stacks his music with honest writing and cinematic ambition. With a knack for stitching emotion into engaging sonic landscapes, Tristan’s work takes listeners into the intimate moments of heartbreak, healing and growth.
First unveiling his original sonic vision at the end of last year with the debut single “Bad Piggies Rock,” this year he’s released a string of new singles in the build up to his brand new debut EP. Aptly titled 5 SONGS TO GET OVER YOU, he presents a concept record built around the emotional aftermath of a breakup.
Examining the psychological layers of the end of a relationship, he’s structured the record around the five stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, using each song as a lens through which to explore the shifting states of heart and mind that come with loss. Paired with a series of music videos, each one combines to form a short film that brings to life the concept of the EP on screen.
Opened by the lively percussive taps and soft clean guitar tones on “Remind Me When You Return,” an uptempo groove is met by Tristan’s hushed vocals to form a bouncy indie pop scene. Developing with the stabs of lightly crunching guitars and the rising intensity of his vocal performance, the track takes on a charging rock-inflected energy to deliver an anthemic sound brimming with infectious vocal hooks and slick lead guitar flourishes.
“E-Girl” follows with lilting clean guitar rhythms and expressive vocals, building with the punch of pattering drums as the track takes flight with instantly catchy leads and swooping backing vocalisations. Serving up another epic pop-focused indie rock outing, it’s a gripping and thoroughly memorable jam that puts Tristan’s unique sound and wide appeal on full display.
With “Tell Me That You Love Me Too,” his belted vocals kick start a gritty rock arrangement driven by the steady strike of drums which swells with a bright rhythmic shift to craft a thrilling synth rock sound. Deftly balancing a retro 80s-tinged aesthetic with a cutting edge vibe, it’s another superb showcase of his forward-thinking musical output.
“Miss U” sees Tristan lean into a more tender side of his sound with a delicate, stripped back arrangement and emotive vocal performance before the instrumentation surges with rolling drums and layers of driving guitars. Channelling an energising punk pop sound capped by engrossing vocal work, it’s an exhilarating track that reveals the artist’s extraordinary sonic range.
Closing the EP with the brand new lead single “Leave You in the Past,” the mellow hop of grooving drums and soft guitar tones combine to form a slick backdrop for Tristan’s compelling vocals to hover above. With more catchy writing and layers of airy backing vocals, it’s a charming finale that concludes his sensational debut EP on a note of acceptance.
